kudo -> Power picados (Jan. 18 2012 20:29:34)

I have a theory in my mind after watching so many maestros doing fast, powerful, clean and clear picados. Im not sure if I am right or wrong, and I physically tried it on my guitar yesterday and it seems to give me a clear and clean sound but its adding much tension in my hand that makes the speed out of control ! I go either way too fast or too slow. the only way I can explain this is by a picture I found":

look at thumb on the 6th string and look at the string thats being plucked, they are all being pushed with lots of force!

is that really the secret?? what do you guys think? is where all the speed and power comes from?? why is it out of control for me when I do this??

the reason I think why he has his thumb pushing down on the string is because he doesnt want to change the angle of attack on the picados, so for him to reach the first and 2nd strings, he has to push down with his thumb. thats my theory which is based on me trying it at home, what do you think?
the idea is RESTING VS PUSHING on the 6th string, does that make a difference?

I have often noticed the thumb pushing on the 6th string and also the thumb kinda being hooked behind the 6th as well , and I have tried it but it doesnt seem to work for me , in fact it feels uncomfortable , the only way I get faster is if I play softer and move my hand forward quite a bit , like the middle of the sound hole ,
But I still have a lot of problems with the location(s) of my right hand ,but I'm sure as well it is the key to many things,

No, the secret is as has been discussed dozens of times on foro. A secure plant or preparation for strokes.... and that is best accomplished by practicing staccato with RH (picking hand) alternation. With a secure plant you achieve the sound and volume you need with little effort or "strength" or even tension really, plus you must instinctively become more economic with movement to achieve the staccato sound required. But to achieve speed you have to prepare the next finger to position quick enough...controlling rhythm is the key as rhythm ie timing is "speed".

It is wrong to think that pushing hard against your thumb or being deliberately tense is gonna make you quick and loud WITH CONTROL. You might blow your hand out doing that.
