Kate -> Flamenco in Wales (Jun. 5 2005 16:38:25)

Jon and I , the Welsh contigent here on the Forum, have often joked about Welsh Choral and Flamenco singing so I thought I would post a bit about a lecture my parents went to the other day at Aber University. The speaker was Mario Bassini and the topic was Italians in Wales. My Fathers family came from Italy in the 19th century and this was the exact period the lecture was about. Unfortunately no mention at all was made of the many Italian Gypsies that came to Wales, such as my Sinti ancestors did, but surprisingly the lecture did include references to the Andalucians who emmigrated to Wales ( again no mention of them being Gypsy) who brought Flamenco with them which, according to the speaker was an influence on Welsh Choral singing. He did not expand on this theory but when Mum told me I instantly thought of our comments about the fin de fiesta bulería on Emilio's album sounding like a Welsh Male choir. Also the image of my parents sitting in Plaza Fatima with the flamenco singers Victor El Charico and Jaime Heredía and singing Sospan Fach to them. Kate
