Hello,
I'm interested in the Yamaha CG172SF (or a CG171SF) if still available. Several months ago, I was at a Guitar Center Store and tried both of them (at the time, they still had a 171), but I didn't buy either of them.
Now, I'm ready to get one of them, but if I remember correctly, when I played them, the action seemed high on both of them, higher than what I'd expect on a flamenco.
My question is, do any of you know whether there is enough saddle on either model to be able to lower the action down to 3mm or below?
The closest store to me is about 200 miles away, so I can't just run in and check it.

most if not all factory guitars come with high action the logic being buzzing would turn off the average factory guitar buyer. every yamaha flamenco guitar i have seen has had enough saddle to lower the action. that said, the yamaha flamenco guitars i have played have weak in the bass end and you may lose some bass response if you go below 3mm. i assume the guitar(s) that interest you are new so there should not be any problems by lowering the action.

I have one of the Yamaha 171SF's and have played several of them. They all had very good bass and good enough treble and midrange; the one I have now is very nice. Those that I sampled had very low actions with excessive buzz. I did make a new saddle for mine and it is a very nice guitar especially for the price. I have not seen the new 172SF.

If you know you are going to buy the Y171SF i would get online at the guitar CT website and look through the used guitars.
They do not list the Y171 SF as a flamenco guitar and you have to look throught the nylon lassical guitar section.
I just bought one and had it delived for $199. They also give a 30 warranty on it.

Yes, I realize that I could probably find a used one, but I really want a new one, either a 171 or a 172. My real question was about whether I'd be able to lower the action.

As you can see from the answers you've had so far the action might need adjusting dependent on the individual guitar - they vary greatly, especially factory guitars.

The good news is that adjustment is relatively easy [:)]

I have a 171SF as well and although you can adjust the action or put a bone bridge on etc , I actually find that the guitar is set up OK , from factory , remember that too low an action can present its own problems with sound as well .
I dont think you should worry too much about that since you dont actually have the guitar as yet .
IF you get one then own it for a while before you start changing it, you will have enough to worry about just getting your flamenco skills together ....

last night I finally had the opportunity to try this famous new 172 SF; a friend of mine (much younger than me :-) and beginners on guitar) was able to have it sent from the U.S. (this model is not sold in Europe, at least not in Italy), he wished a my opinion on it.


.... well, now about the action: it was 3mm at 12 fr, I think is ok on this guitar, and there were no buzz at all. I don't think you need to lower the action!

..... for the price it is sold, this factory guitar is very convenient!
