... is a Portuguese Flamenco guitarist who plays a brilliant track on Ana Moura's "Guarda-me a vida na mao" --- a newer Fado CD. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with his work? He sounds incredible!

Hi,
Perhaps there is more actualised news but this is what I found so far:
Pedro Jóia
Born in 1970, concluded the “o Curso de Guitarra do Conservatório Nacional” - Lisboa with the teacher Manuel Morais.
His interest in flamenco started in 1986 , first as self-taught and later frequented master-classes with Paco Peña and Gerardo Nuñez.
From 1992 to 1998 studiesd and worked with” guitarrista Manolo Sanlúcar em Córdoba e Salúncar de Barrameda”.
He gives guitar classes in several institutions and payed in several festivals including “Festival Internacional de Córdoba”
First CD in 1996 “Guadiano” - in 1999 “Sueste”—2001” variações sobre Carlos Paredes”
Regards
Antonio

Unfortunatly no audio samples on the first 2 CD's . The last one is not flamenco (the song verdes anos - has a flamenco flavour)

Thanks for the information. I enjoy both Flamenco and Fado, and I was fascinated by Joia's attempts to apply a solo guitar-Flamenco interpretation to a very well-known Fado tune by Fontes Roche on the Ana Moura CD. The same tune appears (with different lyrics) on Cristina Branco's Corpo Illuminado CD, in a more traditional trio configuration. Apparently Fontes Roche was a guitarist for the famous Fadista, Amalia Rodriguez.

New and great record , a mix of everything , not a thematic record on a particular style or artist , i think that its his first record that refletes his own style , inspirations etc...

Moisaico , love all the songs , including the Fado one (not a huge lover of fado)

heres the last song of the record

We have off topic for this stuff. This is the FLAMENCO general section. There were some examples of cross over with or involving flamenco artists here that have historically pushed the limits of this section, understandably. The world music topic that was a bit hot a while back is also a candidate for being moved to off topic.

Ricardo -> RE: Pedro Joia (Mar. 8 2024 12:15:46)

Any videos of him, or audio for that matter, with flamenco singer or dancer?

Manitas de Lata -> RE: Pedro Joia (Mar. 8 2024 13:38:26)

thats a good question... maybe not , will search

He begin studie classical , after that travelled and lived in spain , learned with manolo sanlucar paco pena , gerardo nunez
turned pro at 19
even the most flamenco record from him has one or two tracks that arent flamenco
hes fusion , so he mixes a lot of things

Had to revisit "Sueste" record (1999)
Funny if you ear the next track "Flor cortada" feels like a Vicente song
