I read this before watching the vids and was half expecting the audience to clap along at some point [8|] Considering how German audiences love to clap along at every occasion no matter how inappropriate..I wouldn't have put it beyond them.

After he finished the piece, they only clapped for about 40 seconds. Is that too long by your standards?

Interesting.
I see the exact opposite.

In my eyes and ears Haddad is just out of upper amateur level and a bit too much into personal ways of less musical improvisation, while Martin is not only duende and in another league of control, but has a touch to the strings that grants him his individual niche in the player section.

IMO, Amir could definitly learn from him.

Ruphus

Elie -> RE: Mariano Martin (Jan. 28 2012 20:50:27)

hey Ruphus,
with all due respect ofcourse
I'm sure you've seen this before :

man in my opinion Amir's performance is superior to Mariano's , he's just more powerful and more enjoyable ... while Mariano's playing is somehow shy and too formal i would say

quote:

less musical improvisation

do you think that about that alegria they played above ?
I don't know but what I can see is that Amir's improvisation skills is way more creative than Mariano

[:)] cheers mate

Ruphus -> RE: Mariano Martin (Jan. 28 2012 21:31:24)

I can´t access YT.

I was judging before all by the solo videos of Haddad.
In the duets with Martin he plays the best I have seen from him, especially with the oud.

If you won´t hear the musical difference take visual clues as indicator.
See how Haddad´s playing comes from the arms, while with Martin the music goes through and is generated by the entire body.
He is living rhythm and rounds up great harmonically.

Also note how his fingers are flipping off the strings.

Ruphus

Arash -> RE: Mariano Martin (Jan. 29 2012 8:36:42)

Ruphus,

Amir is both technically and musically light years ahead from Mariano.
I could compare Mariano with some of the intermediate players we have in the Foro.

Ruphus -> RE: Mariano Martin (Jan. 30 2012 10:23:05)

Haddad must be having fans with you guys.

We have to agree to disagree on this matter.

i agree with Ruphus

i didn't want to comment this thread because Mariano Martin was my teacher, i have very much respect for him an for his deep knowledge of flamenco. IMO he considers and enjoys flamenco as an art form that's not just limited to guitar show-off and he's not obsessed by technical guitar-gimmicks, his level as musician is far beyond, he's using his technique to serve the music. i like Amir's playing as well and he's a great guitar player too. the way both are compared and commented in this thread just seem disrespectful to me.... poor and shameless, sorry!
anyway thank you holy evil and orsonw for sharing

Munin -> RE: Mariano Martin (Jan. 30 2012 11:55:56)

What exactly about what was said was "disrespectful"? Just saying that one is better than the other is disrespectful?

Anyway I also think Amir is the better player but the better player is only rarely the better teacher. So I am sure taking lessons with Martin would be great. His playing just seems a bit lifeless and conservative to me.
