kudo -> Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (Nov. 21 2011 14:15:26)

I guess I was one of the first people to buy this DVD as I per-ordered it with an 1 hour or so of it being advertised on La Sonanta.

my review: its great!! way better and very useful to players like myself than the Paco Fernandez book as the fernandez book was more for the advanced players.

Myrddin covers a big range of levels.

it has techniques and exercises: legados, arepggios, picados, rasguedos, alzapua, very approachable and suitable for beginner/intermediate, excercises he learned from his father, who learned it from Manolo Sanlucar.
he also has more advanced excercises from his own pieces for advanced players.
the rest of the book is his own concert pieces, played slowly, with accurate tablature.

the book is neater, looks better , more organized and more accurate tab than paco fernandez. it seems like La Sonanta has learned from their experience with Paco's book and DVD and did all the improvements on Myrddin's :D
BETTER COMPAS clock, better videography, easier to see and follow.

Myrddin is very unique and inspiring, the interview is in english, you get to see his house, his father and his way of living, just so magical!!! he truly is a magician in flamenco guitar. OLE!!

this book and DVD is very useful for guitarists of all levels, beginner/intermediate/advanced.
if you dont have this book, I STRONGLY recommend it!! Its soo good that I wish he had more stuff in it and makes another DVD/book [:)]

I absolutely love his stuff - this is good to hear! I think I'll place my own order soon. Did you have to pay any customs fees or anything? What was the final cost including shipping?

kudo -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (Nov. 21 2011 15:58:35)

its funny that when I orderd the paco fernandez, i didnt pay for customs/taxes. (it must have slipped by)
for this Myrddin , I paid around $40 of customs/taxes . I think I paid a total of $150 or something, say $200 MAX with everything , I dont remember really.

hey Kudo, are the exercises good? Another question is the music shown transferable to your own playing? I've seen some of his videos and while the music is very good, I'm not sure whether we can take a snippet of a falseta or 2 and transfering it to our own playing. Can you give us your view on this?

cheers

very good question!
as you can tell, his compositions are mostly in weird screwed up tunings.
so you cant really take any of those and put them to your library of flasetas which you can pull out on the fly, however, he only has 1 concert piece , which is a bulerias in standard tuning, standard A phy bulerias, with very interesting falsetas of his own which you can take! (WARNING: ITS VERY CHALLENGING at the speed he plays it in)
other than that, you can take some of his technique excercises which are made to fit standard bulerias, rumbas and other pieces, (mostly in standard tunings) which you can apply

Apparently the next La Sonanta DVD will be with Jerónimo Maya by the way. Seems these guys are really firing on all cylinders now.

thank you so much Kudo for the review [:)]
I was thinking of purchasing his dvd

I just have some questions hope you answer when you have time
how many compositions does he cover in his dvd ? can you tell me the names of those pieces ?

on lasonanta.eu they said " Myrddin demonstrates these techniques in practice by playing three of his compositions "
what are the names of those compositions ?[:)]

thank you man [:)] if you "STRONGLY recommend it" its kinda tempting to get it

beno -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (May 18 2012 10:42:17)

well, I'm not questioning Myrddin's skills, as I also think that He's very talented, but the things He plays doesn't sound flamenco to me at all.....

Anyway here He's playing a Salvador Castillo blanca:

That particular clip does not sound like flamenco to you at all?

Well, that was the video that I felt the most close to...that's why I shared it

He's fast, smooth, fluent, but if He'd been the only flamenco guitarist I got to hear first, then probably I wasn't into flamenco today...

Maybe it's just me.... at first I was amazed by how different He sounds, but after listening to 5-6 tracks/Youtube vids I had enough.

Tastes are different..

El Kiko -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (May 18 2012 18:57:26)

i have to agree with beno , its good to watch and listen to , all that hammer-ons and pulloffs , a different view on harmony etc .. and i stole a few snippets ,from him before . but yeah after a while ....you have to go back to what you were doing before ....and that particular clip is great , it does sound flamenco , modern style , but ....i dont know......

Elie -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (May 18 2012 19:25:45)

well I would never get enough of his amazing music

Ricardo -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (May 18 2012 21:26:40)

I like the guy's playing very much. He was in Sanlucar years ago, 2006 maybe? He likes the perpetual motion rhythm with pulloffs and arps in his pieces. He was a very quiet player relatively speaking. I would say for learning flamenco guitar, his style is a bit too personalized, that is if you are going for building a proper traditional base. But I don't really know what he shows in his instructional vid so I can't say for sure. If you are into his avant guard approach, I am sure it's great to see him break his compositions apart.

The sonanta vid is flipped, I assume for right handed students? Odd, but I guess it makes it easier on our brains.

I agree that his playing is not squarely traditional. But I would not say that his playing is "too personalized." I think he's one of those rare individuals who is, in general, an excellent musician and who has taken-up flamenco guitar as one way of expressing his 'muscianship' (if I might coin a new word, at least according to the spell-checking gods). Is he traditional flamenco? No, of course, not. But flamenco guitar benefits when talented musicians engage, and perhaps enliven, the tradition.

mucisianship is in my (oxford) dictionary ..

noun
a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented.
Origin:
late Middle English: from Old French musicien, from Latin musica

So its a perfectly carbuncoulous word ,dont let your spellchecker confrazzle you just prevoid your eloquacious perchery to be more obvia in its deccahondricondimal and midternal ways .....
hope this makes it all; clear ......

here i am holding his book right now and it says in the back
:" in the depth of art you are unique, i have never seen anything more authentic than this" - Rafael Riqueni, (with his signature too) . so who are we to judge how flamenco is his music??

kudo -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (May 19 2012 14:15:35)

Elie, to answer your questions, have a look at the index: does it answer your questions?

thank you so much kudo i appreciate your help [:)]

so I think he teaches three concert pieces and 4 pieces during the exercises session, correct me if I'm mistaken [:)]

machopicasso -> RE: Myrddin Maestro Classes DVD by La Sonanta (May 20 2012 9:35:25)

Kudo, thanks for posting the table of contents. That's very helpful. Curiously, do the concert pieces coincide with any of Myrddin's YouTube videos?

Yeah, I didn't really think I was coining a new word. It's just that the spell-checker didn't get it. Not my spell-checker, mind you, but rather that of the Foro (or Mozilla, perhaps?). Earlier today, I typed a sentence which I know was grammatically correct (albeit complicated on account of the subject matter). Word was totally confused. [&:]
