About compas - frankly when it comes to rumbas, I don't count. I just do what feels right. I didn't like this solo interpretation much because I felt instead of it being variations in compas that were being done, it was rather lapses in timing as compared to the original. Maybe if someone has not heard the original, they might find it works the way it was interpreted here.
I am not an expert, but I consider the compas in such rumbas to be not super-important to follow because there aren't well-defined structures that must be adhered to. If I remember correctly, this rumba's accompanying chords are numerous, and some are played for four beats, while others are played for two (not 100% sure because I haven't played this in a while). The way I think of "compas" in such rumbas is that you play the accompanying chords for the right number of beats. Anything else being done within those limits I find works fine.
It would be a good idea to get the opinions of others here on this matter though, Cathulu, as this is only how I think / deal with such rumbas, and it might not be the best way to go about things.
