untilyoureform -> Regional Palos? (Nov. 13 2011 17:53:20)

Hi there everyone, extreme flamenco noob here.

I'm writing a short paper (15 pages or so) on regional palos. What are some reliable sources of which I can use in my paper?

Questions I'd want to answer within my paper (thanks to HemeolaMan):

Who are some artists that represent various regional differences?
What are some key variations between, say, bulerias or alegrias within different regions?

Feel free to fill me in on just about anything, as I've only been studying for about a month.

Jon, you should already mention that you've checked out Chuck keyser and andalucia.org

But I think if you asked specific questions like Who are some artists that represent various regional differences and what are some key variations between say bulerias or alegrias between regions you might find more answers from the foro.

For serious study I recommend Rito y Geografia...they cover it all for the time period (1971-3). That would be regarding the singing and some guitar playing (not dancing). It is organized in short programs based on song forms (Solea Siguriya Fandangos Levante Malagueñas Fiesta Songs such as buleria and tango) regions (Jerez barrio santiago Triana Sevilla Cadiz y los Puertos Union/Levante and areas outside of andalucia too) and artistic personalities (Mairena Caracol Paco de Lucia etc).

You should when comparing what you call "variations" between palos specify if you refer to melodic of the singing, or rhythmic variation which would be more the guitar/accompaniment. Also, the center Palos should probably be Siguiriya Solea and Fandango, as for example Buleria, Alegria are thought to be rhythmic derivatives of the Solea form. And something like Tientos also has commonalities melodically with Solea.

So you could say start with Siguiriya and talk regions of Triana/Sevilla los puertos and Jerez.....and artistic interpretors starting with the names of the creators. (See norman kliman's site for this http://www.canteytoque.es/sigclas.htm )

The same can next be done with Solea. Again check norman's Site. http://www.canteytoque.es/soleares.htm

After this you can talk about the other songs that are based on Solea forms such as bulerias and bulerias por solea, Alegria and the other cantiñas, Caña and Polo etc...

Then you have Fandangos which is a huge umbrella. The region concept is start with Huelva and evolve east across andalucia, incorporating along the way the personal creators of fandango naturales, Malagueñas, Granainas, Cantes de La mina....(people like Chacon, Nino de Gloria, Pavon, Cepero, M. Torre, Marchena, Caracol, etc etc)

That should cover it all pretty much. [:D]

Ricardo, That´ll mean writing a book and not a 15 pages thing.

Basically, the questions are so undefined that its impossible to answer them. (without writing at least 15 pages [8D])

I think a simple cut and paste of normans 2 web pages (minus the actual mp3 tracks and specific musical jargon, only the verbal descriptions) would be less then 15 pps. And Just a simple listing of the fandango stuff would cover it.

I should be able to throw something together with these sources as useful guidance. Thanks so much!
