(Oct. 13 2011 5:18:23) what are you trying to amplify? your set up depends on what you're trying to mic up. but in general, for cheap, versatile mics, im sure many people will agree with me that the shure sm57 is the way to go. you dont want to go any cheaper than that. music shops usually have some sort of bundle deal with these mics.

There are quite a few music shops there and you can get a feel for what's available and at what price. you can also try them out. We used to spend hours in Andys. Nowadays, not being in London we use StudioSpares for most things, trade prices. http://www.studiospares.com/ Hope this helps.
