I really dont think that only a "good" musician's guitar will improve [:D]
Fact is, such an improvement due to heavy playing exist, this seems to be experienced by almost all players & builders. There is also agreement though on the fact that regardless of that, the guitar can have almost daily ups and downs in sound just like the player in his hearing ability, but this i think only to a degree, that we still are able to tell a bright guitar from a dull one.
Im almost sure, its still speculating though, that it has more to do with the simple mechanics of strings pulling the top and body of a guitar + creating high volume inside the guitar, rather than frequency. Reason is the sound of the WHOLE guitar improves, not just certain frequencies.
