Dear Mr. Gates, On Thursday, 14th of July, I saw your interview with Markus Lantz on German TV. First of all, thank you for mentioning child mortality in underdeveloped countries as a partial reason for overpopulation. When people suffer with mortality, it will certainly give another reason to make more children. One could hypothetically ask why make more children who will have to be fed, instead of using the spared expenses for the medical treatment for a smaller number of children, weren´t there aspects of immediate liquidity and lacking provision for old age. In the interview when you explained how you came to funding charity projects and how it disturbed you to see the poor not counted as humans; I say this in all sincerity and wish to express as well my appreciation of your relief efforts and that you decided do something about that suffering: Your current charity projects, as supportive and humane as they are on first sight, unfortunately do little to change the causes of suffering. As soothing and redeeming as they are to the needs of an individual's temporary situation, these charities remain based on the principles of symptomatic treatment. Deeply considering your interest in improving the human world, I would like to suggest to you a long-term efficient undertaking. This would mean conducting production facilities and manufacturing companies with a salary difference of no more than maybe 1:5. Entertaining no top managers with millions of dollars annual income, but instead with the company’s net profit (after lay asides / reinvestments) more or less evenly distributed among the staff. Under common circumstances this should result in unseen salaries for the low to middle segment in the firm’s hierarchy. Relative to their individual income a fraction of the staffs’ monthly pay should be deposited into a special fund to buy the manufactory from you over time, yet in the same time leaving enough available pay to the employees to live a fair life under incomparably better conditions than any of their colleagues in usual companies. -And unquestionably enhancing their motivation and work quality. Once you have been paid back the investments, the money can be engaged into new projects of similar company philosophy and income structure. You could begin with changes at Microsoft hardware devices manufactories, or built them up new from scratch. And it could be done with any other kind of manufacturing company, relating to the country / market / product demand in question. No matter where you would introduce such humane facilities first, whether in the USA, in Asia, Europe or Africa, with only a bit of public attention the fair policy would progressively spread over the world like a humane bush fire. And the current recipients of charity support in Africa, in the future would likely prefer to be able to finance their medical care by themselves, and in consequence be ready to produce less but well cared for children in an overpopulated world. If you would wholeheartedly like to contribute to a decrease of injustice, to humane being and to the dignity of the people (and fellow creatures), the above suggestion would be the essential and causal way to go. Any consideration of fairness, dignity and philanthropic attitude in general remains secondary as long as the core source of inhumane phenomenon, the expropriation of labour surplus value, is left unchanged.
