Haydn -> Tientos (Sep. 16 2011 22:47:26)

This last week I've been learning tientos for baile accompaniment. However, I'm not having huge amounts of luck gathering information on it. It seems if I Youtube search most palos I can find a plethora of videos that are useful as learning material, be they lessons, falsetas of just performance vids with a nice clear view of the guitarist. With tientos it seems usable video material is hard to come by. As are tabs/lessons, comparatively speaking.

So, is it just me? Or does the tientos form seem to be... neglected, for want of a better word? If it is, then why is this the case? Is it just not as exciting as tangos, for example? Personally, my relatively small experience of this palo has made it one of my more favourite ones.

If anyone could point me in the direction of some particularly fine examples of tientos I would be very appreciative [:)]

If you got spotify you can serach "solo compas" and find a lot of them there for free and its legal.

Theres no tab but you can play a long to real Tientos baile and cante.

The first three minutes of this video is tientos, and then (as is often the case) it transitions to tangos. Though it's cante, I found it helpful when I was learning tientos for a dance class I used to accompany.

If you want audio recordings of tientos, here are a few (including some for which there's tab):

1) PDL, "Llanto A Cádiz" on "La Fabulosa Guitarra de Paco de Lucía"
2) PDL, "Tientos del Mentidero" on "El Duende Flamenco de Paco de Lucia"
3) Gerardo Nuñez, "Llorando Ante Cristo Estoy" on "Me Sabe Amargo" (on iTunes)

Thanks for all the replies guys. This has all been very useful. [:)]

There is one issue about compás I was hoping one of you knowledgable fellows could help me out with. [;)]

I have found that there are many different ways to count Tientos, from many different sources. (The notes in brackets are unaccented; I hope I've made the counting clear)

I have encountered: 1 (&) a 2 (&) a (3) (&) a 4 (&) (a) - from Juan Martin's book.
Also, I've seen: 1 (&) (a) 2 (&) a 3 (&) (a) 4 (&) (a)

In Paco Peña's Toques Flamencos, tientos is played as a combination of simple and compound time.

And what really confuses me is that I often hear palmas playing:
1 (&) 2 & 3 (&) 4 (&)

Are all of these methods viable alternatives or regional differences? I feel like my head might explode trying to make sense of this! [:(]

Thank you in advance, kind sirs, for putting me out of my misery.
