I don't want to say anything bad about this book as I have not read enough of it. You described it well, the sentences could be shorter or expressed more simply.
I just took the book out again and read here and there in different chapters and some parts are not that bad, others, I have a hard time understanding. But I don't think it is only because of my somewhat limited vocabulary, it is also the sentences. I have read over 30 books in Spanish and this one is a major challenge for me. Just with this spot check, I get blocked often, more than once a page. For me this read will also be a language learning exercise.
You actually reminded me of this book and today I asked someone at work to spend 1/2 an hour with me from time to time to go through it.
I am still very interested in reading it and from the 'spot reads' I have done, I see that it will be interesting from a cultural point of view as he described his youth.
The following is part of the intro that originally made me think 'oh-ho...' and in this part, it is not the vocabulary that made me go 'oh ho' it was the 'tone/style'. But the book is not all like this.
