PERCUSSITY FLAMENCO CAJON COURSES

::Description

This workshop offers an introspection into the fascinating world of Flamenco. We demonstrate popular styles like Rumba, Tangos, Bulerías and Soleás amongst others while talking about their historic and cultural background.

During these interactive workshops students explore a unique and hip instrument called the Cajon. This instrument is becoming very popular amongst musicians due to its versatility and sonic closeness to the drum kit. Rudimental applications and drum friendly techniques are also another reason why a lot of performers are passionate about the Cajon.

Students explore new possibilities of how to apply rhythms usually performed on drums and learn to transfer them to the Cajon thus providing a new voice that can easily be used in acoustic gig situations.

Many jazz musicians as well as rock players have been influenced by Flamenco music for decades. The rhythmic richness and phrasing capabilities of this style offers a new and extended musical vocabulary that can be applied and adapted onto any other instrument or style to create interesting performances and provide soloing ideas in odd time signatures.
Aims and outcomes

At the end of the course students will be able to play and recognise some of the most important and influential flamenco styles.

The workshop also aims to demonstrate transferable techniques from other styles and other percussion on to the Cajon and vice versa. Students learn to apply flamenco and odd time phrasing techniques to contemporary styles such as funk, rock or jazz, which provides them with new creative ideas that can be used to improve their music vocabulary.

Hand and brush techniques as well as drum rudiments, grooves and fills will be covered and applied to the Cajon. These basic concepts provide the modern musician with adaptable tools that can also be used in different situations like: when a softer sound is required, when there are space limitations, when an extra colour is needed or in acoustic set ups.
