Ramón -> Flamenco Scene in Portugal?? (Apr. 21 2005 15:47:21)

I am a surfer, first, and a flamenco player a close second, but I HAVE to have my waves (those who surf will understand this passion), and I am thinking of relocating to the south or southwest corner of Portugal, where I'm only a couple of hours from Sevilla. I have an instructor there, and I know there's quite a bit of flamenco there, but I was wondering if the Portuguese have also picked up flamenco to any extent, or would I be just playing and studying alone until I head to Spain on weekends (unless the surf is going off!)...

Appreciate any thoughts of those who have even visited or spent time in that area; prices, rents, compares-to, etc.... THANKS!

Ramon

Why Portugal, what's wrong with the Costa De Luz in Spain? Just over the border and a little South, it's very close to Jerez and Cadiz, so you won't go short of surfing or the best in flamenco. Cost of living is a lot less than La Jolla, if you take some money with you.

Ramón -> RE: Flamenco Scene in Portugal?? (Apr. 21 2005 17:06:37)

Lol! Not enough surf there (often blocked), and mostly the wind blows onshore off the Moroccan coast. I've seen great surf shots there, but was told there are a lot of windmills in the area, which harness all that wind (unfortunately, the wrong direction).

I can always get to Spain and play on the weekends, by bus, but got spoiled growing up on the beaches of So Cal, walking to the surf. And here in La Jolla, and it's beautiful, but it's going downhill quickly, with $1.2M, 800 sq.' (80 sq M's...is that right?) beach shacks.

Friends of mine rave about Portugal and the surf, so I'm trying to find if there is a flamenco scene, and get the best of my two worlds!

Just thought I'd post and just get any info I could...

thanks again

Hi Ramon,

A friend of mine , a Cordobes flamenco guitar player, was recently in Portugal for over a year. He was desperate for flamenco, and even tried to set up some gigs but no-one was interested so we couldn't do anything. I guess what I am saying is that I dont think there is a flamenco scene in Portugal. Sorry mate.

I watched a bunch of surfers in Cadiz in one of the bays there. I don't know how good the surf is there but there definitely were surfers there.

Ramon,
Antonio,on this Forum lives in Portugal, and it seems from his posts that there is not much Flamenco going down at all there.
Portugal is famous for it's "Fados", an art form similar to, but not as big in scope as Flamenco.
It's played on guitar as well, so you could jump ship and become a Fadisto. [:D]

cheers

Ron

Hey Ramon,
I'm an avid surfer too. I live in Northern California about 15 minutes from Mavericks, but that break is too much for me! I've always heard that nothing Spanish, including flamenco, is popular in Portugal. You might want to check out wannasurf.com They seem to indicate that there are some decent breaks in S. Spain. I(t's been onshore here for almost a month :-( but I'm gettting a few waves when it's not howling. I'm trying to get out of work early today to catch a few. What kind of board do you ride?

veet -> RE: Flamenco Scene in Portugal?? (Apr. 21 2005 21:38:14)

Fado and Flamenco have zero in common, not to detract from the sad and beautiful Fado. Even the guitars are quite different. Huelva is a 15 minute drive from the border, there may be something there for you. (But Huelva is no Sevilla or Jerez.)

Hola

Tarifa is a world home of windsurfing. The son on one of my girlfriends in Cádiz was a Spanish champion of surfing or sailboarding or similar. There is a lot of wind in Cadiz and when the Poniente blows, the tourists leave the beach and the surfers come out. Not 20 metre waves of course, but 20 metre flamenco. You sound like someone who wants a perfect wave, a perfect woman and perfect flamenco all at the same time. La vida no es así, picha!

Am appreciating all the input, but I assumed it would be as much. Live on the beach and drive for flamenco and spend weekends in Spain, and just practice alone at nights in Portugal (unless of course the perfect girl washes up to my doorstep), then practice after after.....

I have seen some incredible surf shots on wannasurf.com, but heard through a Spanish friend that some of those pics are not actually of those breaks! However, I'm headed over in the Fall to play, look at the scene, and decide what I want the most, put the biz up for sale, and go! No kids, no ex-wives, no baggage.

Love to play flamenco, but - if you surf - you'd understand how it is totally unlike anything else - but flamenco fills the night and my morning coffee is next to me as I play....

Just want to do all this under a different sky! Thank you all for helping. I really enjoy everyone's positive attitudes here!

btw from what i understood when visiting Lisbon, the Fado is an art that is practised only there, not in all portugal. The melodical guitar is played on a portugese guitar which is small and with steel strings and played with picks attached to your fingers. The conventional guitar is also often used but only as rythmic accompany, i.e. strum 3 chords up and down. Anyhow fado is very beautiful and carries a melancholic feeling that i havent found in any other music.

Exactly my feelings and nicely expressed Ramón. I should be making my move to Granada in the next few weeks, we must keep in touch and maybe you'll find yourself over my way on your travels. Love to try a little surfing; I could swap you a walk in the moutains or a beer with Kate and Anders in the Plaza Neuva.

Coincidentally, I was dating a lovely girl from El Cajon and we had planned to move in near La Jolla, a very pretty and very expensive part of the coast I admit. Hard to keep dating from 5000 miles away, though.

Good luck in your journey and keep us informed.

Take notice of Sean. Tarifa is right on the mainland tip and a surfers paradise. I spent two weeks in Portugal and they don't like the Spaniards never mind flamenco. I saw or heard nothing at all that came near flamenco apart from a tourist dance show in one hotel near Loule. Mind you, the only thing I've ever surfed is the internet, but I've heard people rave about Tarifa.[:)]

Best.

Jim.

Hi Ramon,

I live in the South of Portugal. Although the flamenco scene here is not very wide, it is not completely inexistent (more on the dance side anyway).
I am a beginner in flamenco so I don’t think I can be of very much help; also, I don’t surf (too old for that [;)] )
There is a flamenco dance company in Lisbon (sorry, the information is in portuguese): http://dancar.no.sapo.pt/index.htm
Another one very near Lisbon: http://www.soleares.org/pt/index.html
A flamenco guitar teacher in Porto- Lino de Mingo: http://www.zingadin.pt/asp/projectos_info.asp?ID=TAblaoFlamenco
A flamenco guitar teacher in the south-Xavier Llonch- that accompanies a small dance company “el camino” : http://el-camino.s5.com/
Is it surf or windsurf that you practice?

Hope this helps
Antonio

Ramón -> RE: Flamenco Scene in Portugal?? (Apr. 23 2005 21:30:28)

Again, thanks to all for the input. And to those questions, I am a surfer. I windsurf a bit, but if that was what I did, the Costa de la Luna would be great, with all the wind, but surfers like no wind, or wind that blows from the land and grooms the waves.

And I tire of the crowds, attitudes, costs, traffic, density, etc., here in So Cal. I was raised on the beaches here, and love the Med' climate, but it's changed sooooo much here, so I thought I might find the best of both my worlds, there (but San Diego does have a really good flamenco scene, and it's really starting to get organized, too!). And I have so fallen in love with playing Flamenco, really want to absorb it, and hope to become a fairly strong player if I was immersed in it.

A funny interjection here.... A few months ago, my mom stopped by my house as I was practicing, and as we chatted, I started to do some rasqueo excercises. My mom says;

"I used to have a pretty good rasqueo..."

HUHWHAT!!?????????? "WHAT DID YOU SAY, MOM"??

" Yea, you remember when Nancy (her friend) came back from 7 years in Spain? She got into flamenco and taught me..."

ANDYOUDIDN'TTEACHMETHIS!!!??? She should have chained me to the bed with black bread and water, and today I'd be amazing! She had these old Carlos Montoya albums I used to listen to and LOVED, but I was like 6, and didn't make the connection at the time. Just a kid with a 6-secong attention span, so I never even remembered her playing the guitar. Such is life, huh? Now, if only she had bought some $300.00 Spanish guitars in 1962....

So I hope to get over there in the Fall and take a close, realistic look, both there and Spain, spend a month, and see what I see.

And I posted this for those of you in the Cali' area, but might as well add it here, too...

Thanks everyone.
