Guest -> Petenera (Aug. 13 2011 0:58:49)

i have been given a 'solo'spot in an upcoming show so have been preparing some ideas...
initially i was thinking guarija but as this is featured as a dance in the first half i'm pretty sure i will play a petenera that i have been playing around with for a while
although i have access to a singer in this show i'm thinking of presenting it as a solo guitar piece...will this work?
i have transcribed and based my current piece on the José Menese - José Antonio Rodriguez performance from saura's movie but am looking for more ideas...
so
an opportunity here for anyone to post their favourite [?] petenera....
any response, thoughts, theories or criticism's will be greatly appreciated
saludos

I cannot discuss the palo whose name we shall not mention.

the curse began years ago..but.
this week?
$1500 mechanics bill for my timing belt
delayed payment from my work which gave me zilch bargaining power on andy's #9 blanca
my teenage daughter is obsessed with a pot smoking high school drop out...
the dog left a small brown present in my bed....
can it get worse than this?
[:(]

any insight into the folklore would also be appreciated.

marduk -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 13 2011 4:25:49)

I would really enjoy hearing you perform it with said singer ;)

yes

Donald -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 13 2011 19:36:36)

Its a pity it is n't played more often as it really a nice sounding palo. I suppose the MacBeth style curse is partly related to the the essential sadness of the letras.

Tomrocker -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 13 2011 20:25:43)

That's just ridicules! Petenera is a wonderful palo and what happens in life doesn't have anything to do with it!!!

Gimar Yestra -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 14 2011 0:19:29)

forgive me I am a flamenco noob.. what is Petenera??

Guest -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 14 2011 1:28:45)

thanks...
have no illusion about the myth...pretty average week in the scheme of things.
life dishes out all sort of crap regardless of what music your playing
but do think it is a beautiful palo/lament
comments said tongue in cheek....
the singer from alecrias has no issue with the palo it just the logistics of rehersal time which is why i thought i would present it as a solo piece...

thanks KMM...huge help, just what i'm after...will leave you something in my will[:D]

and thanks ricardo...[:D]

Gimar the palo has a history of being 'cursed' or 'bad luck' when sung or danced.
minor key lament...in 12 beat...possibly sephardic in origin.
here is the a well known example....just not much else of value on you tube...seems there a few petenera's in the classical guitar rep.

Adam -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 14 2011 9:11:34)

MACBETH

Guest -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 14 2011 10:30:15)

thanks Ramparts...
but is only when a petenera is sung and danced?
if at all...

ANYONE?
more music less myth?

This would involve less improvisation, but, if logistics is an issue, why not agree in advance to perform the YouTube clip you posted? If you both agreed to use that as the template, then it'd seem you could save rehearsal time.

i have transcribed the letra's from the clip...
guess it may not be that easy in reality
he has a petenera letra i have'nt heard, nor know
if time permits i will try
not sure he will agree to the template idea...i would have to work more to his direction...so it's a bit of an unknown...very colorful character involved and want to feel good about this performance.......
but who knows it may all sync up in which case i will have more than enough featured parts...
but thanks for the suggestion...good idea, appreciated...
improvisation is'nt a huge issue....bit of a comfort zone for me...just need more prepared material...

So listening alot to Cameron's petenera....

Chiste de Gales -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 31 2011 13:47:39)

Certain people will leave the room if you perform it.

Juan Serrano explains why its considered bad luck:

http://books.google.com/books?id=vXOuoakYRTEC&pg=PP36&lpg=PP36&dq=petenera+%22bad+luck%22&source=bl&ots=SGUimy2EQL&sig=Wfju9-7Ju1AdqcBj_YihGbKE26E&hl=en&ei=QDheTsulCYLZgQeFmOWdAg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CCwQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q=petenera%20%22bad%20luck%22&f=false

I however, know the difference between causation and correlation and dont have a problem with this palo.

Harry -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 31 2011 15:26:06)

Can someone clarify if simply performing this palo is bad luck? I mean is it ok to play it at home alone hehe?

Estevan -> RE: Petenera (Aug. 31 2011 20:53:29)

Just make sure to leave the tab on your music stand so they'll know what happened to you...

as turned out i played a solo taranta for the show....[:)]
but still working on assembling an arrangement. Enjoying the Paco transcriptions..

i think the myth is largely based on the elements of cante and baile...
this link was supplied from a related thread

translation is available. great read. explains the background of the 'bad luck'....

peteneras is also a part of mexican folk music...introduced when the spanish arrived..it seems to have a long history...possible dating back to sephardic origins and introduced to spain in the 15th centuary....
