one thing i've notice on facebook and through the foro is the surprising amount of people who have met morao in real life and what a down to earth, friendly and fun guy he was.

when I met him at the after show party in jerez, i had a chat saying i was a big aficionado of the jerez style, his music etc and he was kind enough to answer a few questions I had about his technique & the jerez style of playing. Most artists i've met don't like talking "shop" i.e music or technique after a show, but i think he saw the eagerness i had to understand a thing he loved and was willing to share his views.

its a tragic situation,...and simply put his shoes are too big to fill.

Well said, Henry - I've noticed the same regarding comments from people who were lucky enough to meet him. I never had the pleasure myself, but I'll treasure his contribution to flamenco until the end of my days.

Something I noticed about him from watching lots of interviews and documentary videos was his playful nature and zest for life. I found it very inspiring and refreshing to watch him savor a sip of sherry or carefully wash and prepare mushroom tapas for a roomful of close friends. Finding such pleasure with the simple things in life is the key to true happiness IMO.

El_Tortuga -> RE: Rest in peace, Moraito Chico... (Aug. 11 2011 15:26:57)

My first (and only) trip to Spain was in 1999 after my bandmates and I got funding to travel there. While we stayed mostly in Sevilla, we did get a chance to travel to Jerez. The reason why we went is because there was a major double-bill: Terremoto Hijo w/ Fernando Moreno, and Tomasa La Macanita w/ Moraito. It was an amazing show to say the least, and there's much to tell about the PA equipment failing LOL but I'll save that for another post.

So I guess there's one bright spot in this news: Moraito can jam again with Terremoto Hijo!!

Well let's help a flamenco still living that needs help now.
I don't have much but I have $10.
Remember: Artists don't get benefits from their careers. But they DO contribute the same and arguably more to the world than the average 'covered' person.

Edit: It is helpful when making a statement like this one that you provide a LINK to what it is you are talking about...O/W people may think you are crazy...

Help Angelita Vargas.

(To Sanlucar, Moraito was one of the most outstanding figures in flamenco, "whether it was through his personality or his identity with his family." The guitarist from Sanlucar emphasized that the 'Morao' family "has left behind an identity that is known by all", and he affirms feeling "very affected" by the passing of 'Moraito", a guitarist with "a rare human nature", who should be remembered "with great respect and love".

This sad news makes it difficult to express myself in english... The way that he projected all of that nerve and personality through his playing has always been so inspiring to me, it's like watching something totally natural, fluid, and in its element. Flamenco is full of musicians that really know how to swing, but even in that crowd, he stands out. To me he will represent the embodiment of groove, and of being in the music.

here is a bunch of Moraito videos, starting from when he was still a kid.

Its all so sad so many of the greats have passed away in recent years. Its almost as though you could cross off half the figures in The Carlos Saura Flamenco video and others as well.

guido -> RE: Rest in peace, Moraito Chico... (Aug. 14 2011 22:39:12)

Sad news and great loss. Didn't know he was ill. Why do always the inspiring and humble persons have to go too early and all the dictators e.g. Kim Jong Il are given a longer life???Makes me angry...

I wrote this obit a few hours after the terrible news began to circulate. Such a painful loss.

Estela

henrym3483 -> RE: Rest in peace, Moraito Chico... (Aug. 15 2011 20:16:57)

very fitting tribute estela, i've passed by and had a beer in "el arco" across from moraito's home with the little guitar tile above the door.

zata -> RE: Rest in peace, Moraito Chico... (Aug. 15 2011 20:24:13)

The day Manuel died, I went to have a drink at the Arco and noticed the tile was no longer above the door. Instead a similar image was painted alongside. I wonder if someone pried off the tile for a souvenir, can't imagine any other explanation...

that'd be downright weird if they did. thing thats puzzled me for the last few days is whos going to be jose merce's right hand man from here onwards, who's gonna step into the shoes of prob the most wanted and tasteful accompanist in spain?

when a man of morao's gifts passes away...in some respect the "greatness" of others is slightly diminished...he was the man who put the icing on the "cante cake"...i cant seem to think of any player who perfectly fitted and elevated so many cantaors and cantaora's voices to another level.

Dammit....just heard about this today. Been on vacation and not near a computer. Sooooo sad...he was my first real favorite flamenco guitarist. Saw him last summer in Puebla de Cazalla, in fact.

Martin -> RE: Rest in peace, Moraito Chico... (Aug. 20 2011 15:22:00)

I'm just back from abroad, so only just found out. Great man and I loved his playing. He will be sadly missed

Moraito Chico passed away at the same time that I joined the forum. Being fairly new to Flamenco I did not know about him. I have viewed the videos that members have posted and apart from his technical skill the feeling of joy that comes through in his playing is wonderful. This is exactly the approach to playing that I find inspirational. He is gone but the joy in his music will inspire me as long as I live.
