britguy -> Low (no)volume sound recorders??? (Aug. 9 2011 19:37:56)

Dropped into a big Toronto music store today, determined to buy a portable sound recorder with a 'slowdown-retain pitch' feature to help with my lessons. Looked at several Tascam models and asked to try one - a mid-price model - in the store.

After recording a few bars of Seguiriyas I tried playing it back. No volume - even when the volume control was at the maximum! The salesperson explaind that these digital portable recorders have very small speakers and can only be played back through headphones, etc. Too bad!

I want a portable recorder with enough playback volume that I can listen to when its sitting on the table, without extra speakers or headphones. He tells me there's no such animal. Is this really true? Do the more expensive models have higher volume speakers?

Seems to me in the past I had several little inexpensive cassette tape recorders that played back quite adequately when sitting on the table several feet away. Are there really no small digital recorders with sufficient playback volume that you dont need headphones or extra speakers?

Anybody help here?

Love to know, and soon. . . .

You would be better off getting the best recorder you can get and then some portable speakers. I am sure there is plenty of decent and inexpensive portable speakers on the market these days.

The Tascam speaker has to be turned on, default in the firmware is "off." The sound is stiil weak but useable. The option is to use the line-out jack into a set of active, amplified, speakers similar to what you would use for your computer. I have the DR-05 and really like it.

best for lessons is an Iphone/ipod touch imo. you can record in high quality audio with for example a blue stereo mic http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/12/macworld-2010-hands-on-with-the-blue-mikey/ (there is even a mikey 2 now days)

plus you can record a video of your teacher playing a falsetta.
