britguy -> Low (no)volume sound recorders??? (Aug. 9 2011 19:37:56)

Dropped into a big Toronto music store today, determined to buy a portable sound recorder with a 'slowdown-retain pitch' feature to help with my lessons. Looked at several Tascam models and asked to try one - a mid-price model - in the store. After recording a few bars of Seguiriyas I tried playing it back. No volume - even when the volume control was at the maximum! The salesperson explaind that these digital portable recorders have very small speakers and can only be played back through headphones, etc. Too bad! I want a portable recorder with enough playback volume that I can listen to when its sitting on the table, without extra speakers or headphones. He tells me there's no such animal. Is this really true? Do the more expensive models have higher volume speakers? Seems to me in the past I had several little inexpensive cassette tape recorders that played back quite adequately when sitting on the table several feet away. Are there really no small digital recorders with sufficient playback volume that you dont need headphones or extra speakers? Anybody help here? Love to know, and soon. . . .
