I just shipped an acoustic guitar using USPS from Pgh, PA to NC and it cost almost $74 USD. It’s not like I shipped the thing to California. I know USPS lost $8 billion USD last year and there are plans to close 3,600 post office branches if necessary, but $74 is an outrage. I bet it would have cost under $30 five years ago and around $20 in 2003. So much for commerce…

What do you guys—esp. the luthiers—pay to ship an acoustic guitar with insurance?

Pgh, the last time I sold a guitar on Ebay (electric) I sent it FEDEX ground, and it was closer to $50. This was a year or so ago. I use FEDEX ground all the time-best and cheapest.

The prices have been going up a lot. I think you could have gotten away cheaper using FedEx.. I'm in the Northeast and it's usually about $40-50 for the east coast, $50-70 for midwest/south and $70-80 to the west coast.
What's truly rediculous is trying to ship to Europe or anywhere overseas. USPS is by far the cheapest at about $100 to Europe, but they only insure up to $650 and are thus useless to me. Besides them, you're going to pay around $500-600 with any of the private carriers. [8|][:@]

I shipped a guitar to CA two months ago and it was $42 and included an insured value of $400.

I'll have to check FEDEX. Thanks, Dave.

Thanks, Andy. It's hard to have to deal with all these rising costs.
