val -> New Bienal for Malaga? (Jul. 7 2011 0:39:54)

Google doesn't translate this very well and my attempts are even worse.

Sorry for the caps - not mine - I copied and pasted

SUERTE A TODOS LOS FLAMENCOS/AS DE MÁLAGA QUE SE REUNEN ESTA TARDE A LAS 6 EN DIPUTACIÓN. AL PARECER HAY INTENCIÓN DE PROGRAMAR UNA NUEVA BIENAL DE FLAMENCO DE MÁLAGA, SEGÚN HA DECLARADO HOY LA DIPUTADA DE CULTURA, MARINA BRAVO, A LA OPINIÓN Y ADEMÁS PARA "NO CUBRIR EL EXPEDIENTE. LA QUEJA QUE TENÍAMOS DESDE EL MUNDO DEL FLAMENCO ES QUE SIEMPRE SE MOVÍAN A LOS MISMOS ARTISTAS, Y HAY QUE DAR CABIDA A TODOS"..

Basically the flamencos are going to try to get a program together for another Bienal de flamenco in Malaga but are having funding problems (again)
quote:

LA QUEJA QUE TENÍAMOS DESDE EL MUNDO DEL FLAMENCO ES QUE SIEMPRE SE MOVÍAN A LOS MISMOS ARTISTAS, Y HAY QUE DAR CABIDA A TODOS"

"the complaint that comes from the flamenco world is that they always use the same artists, and they have to make room (accomadate) for everyone.

So far there has only been one bienal de flamenco in Malaga. The last one was cancelled due to lack of funding. Basically the problem (and this isnt just Malaga) is that due to the financial crisis, all the provinces have less money for cultural events, festivals and concerts. This means that whereas before a flamenco festival would have maybe 20 artists, now there contract maybe 5 or 6 and the rest of the show is smaller local names. This is a problem because always the same big names get picked for every festival. Everyone is starting to get fed up of the same names heading every event.
In Granada the same comment has also been made that Juan Andres Maya, Marina heredia, Estrella morente etc. always are on the bill for everything leaving no chance for new artists to perform....and these guys always seem to be at the head of the queue when funding is being handed out. It does seem to be a mini mafia when it comes to gigs.
Obviously its important to get good artists to make an event but there has to be a fairer way of distributing work and contracts. Everone is being affected. I was talking to Manolete the other day who said he hasnt been contracted for a big concert in spain for nearly 3 years...this is disgraceful considering his standing. Even Gerardo Nuñez said that work is offered for maybe 2 musicians and not a full group anymore. I have seen big names playing in clubs and bars recently!
The cutural ministers need to actually take more of an interest in the diversity of artists and not rely on record sales as a marker of who to contract.

....rant over [:)]
