kudo -> Castillo Blanca selling price (Jul. 4 2011 23:12:19)

so Im not sure yet if I will sell my Castillo Blanca (with top upgrade to European spruce) yet, it all depends on my financial situation, but I hope not to sell it because I love it so much and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

the issue is this:
1- I never sold a guitar before
2- I never bought a used guitar before
3- I dont know what price range I should be asking for
4- Castillo raised his prices

at the time I bought it, it was $2650 USD, made in August 2010.its 11 months used and is in almost new like condition, and it opened up.
it cost me EXACTLY $2856.85 CAD (currency conversion at the time) + around $450 CAD (for customs/tax on border and shipping cost) = $3306.85 CAD

Castillo raised his prices now sells this guitar for $2800 USD (EXCLUDING shipping and customs)
what should I sell my guitar for?
Im thinking of $2500 CAD (EXCLUDING shipping and customs) being the MINIMUM price I can sell it for, TAKING into account that it opened up and has very little scratches and has gotten used to living in a country that has extreme weather conditions in winter, AND its 11 months old and is in almost new like condition

what do you think?
is this a good reasoning for the price?

I believe there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to this. Definitely you want to get as much as possible, and the potential buyer wants to pay as little as possible. The fact that he has raised his prices is interesting in that you can charge more because of this. I think if you sell to someone in Canada it will be a consideration for sure since it is already in the country, so in effect the buyer would be getting a big discount. If the guitar is free of serious wear and tear, I think 2500 is fine.

I don't know if my Castillo would be any special, but I couldn't sell it. It's just easy as that. I've been to a very similar situation, and had to part with my beloved Romero blanca. I regret it very much, and that was a far weaker guitar. If You has any chance to keep it, go and fight for it!

I don't know what things are like in Canada, but with the economy the way it is in the USA now, I'd advise holding onto the guitar unless you have a sure buyer at the price you stipulated. I seriously doubt you could get more than $1700 or $1800 for a second-hand castillo blanca in the U.S. market now. This is not to say your guitar isn't worth $2500 but, after all, it is used. Once you walk out the door with it, it drops in value. Also, it is not a Spanish-made guitar. Yes, the Castillos and the Navarros have good reputations and they do make good guitars but there is still a stigma, to some degree, attached to Mexican-made guitars when it comes to selling them in the marketplace, especially second hand ones. I don't know why that is because many of them are outstanding guitars. Unless you really need the money, hold onto it. Eventually the market will turn around and you'll likely get close to the price you really want. That's my 17 cents of advice. All the best!
