bassam_m -> FMR RNP Lost in Post Office (Jun. 4 2011 21:57:38)

Hello everyone,

I wanted to buy an FMR RNP before! I told my brother who lives in New York to buy it for me and once my parents get back from New York, they'll give it to me. He ordered the RNP from frontendaudio.com and the package was shipped to his apartment! But unfortunately, he wasn't at home so USPS left him a notice in front of his door! He went to pick-up the package from the post office but the guy who works there searched for the package for about 20 minutes but he didn't find anything!!! I'm totally surprised how USPS lost the package! I paid $490 for the FMR RNP and now it's lost!
Any ideas on what to do? Is USPS legally obliged to pay for the lost shipment? (there was no insurance with the shipment)

P.S: The package was shipped via priority mail with a delivery confirmation.

Thank you in advance

No insurance means no payout to you for your loss. If it had been insured for $500 you would still have to jump through some hoops to get your money.

It's possible that they still have it in the system somewhere or that it was returned to the retailer. How many days (after the attempted delivery by USPS) did your brother take to try to retrieve the item? I think USPS only waits three days before returning an item to the sender.

The delivery was attempted on July 2 by the mail man! My brother went to pick up the RNP from the post office on July 4! He also received a notice that he can pick it up anytime after July 3! So I suppose that it's still in the post office but they lost it there or maybe an employee stole it!!!
Any ideas what shall I do?

Really? Even if its LOST and not damaged? When its damaged you have to prove that it was packed correctly etc, but if its lost i think it is sure that the delivery service is responsible for that?
If there is no insurance i guess the only thing you can do is to sue them. Dont know how much that would cost, but they shouldnt have a walk-over! One time the postal service delivered speakers to my old address, although my name sign wasnt at the bell/post box and there was no sign that i would live there. I couldnt get hold of the guy who accepted the package.

Well I used to work as a paralegal with a lawyer in New York and I'm sure I would have to pay a LOT of money if I wanted to sue them! It would cost me more than the price of the RNP!

XXX -> RE: FMR RNP Lost in Post Office (Jun. 5 2011 9:27:41)

I dont know anything about the costs really, i never sued anybody or got sued. But i think if you win you get all your expenses back + you would get a new FMR RNP (or the money it was worth), is that correct?

Im just guessing really, but from common sense it is clear that loosing a package is the fault of the delivery service?

Maybe look into the terms of trade of USPS?

bassam_m -> RE: FMR RNP Lost in Post Office (Jun. 5 2011 10:41:43)

It is clear that I won't win the case even if I sued USPS because the package is not insured! I will be paying a lot of money for the lawyer and I will get nothing in return!! I just hope that they find my package!

Hmm.. Thats the reason why I let the shops take the money from my bank account. If something happens... I tell my bank to put the money back and block the shop. Easy.

I bought some expensive flamenco books in past. 2 times. They didn´t arrive. I called the shop. They were not cooperative. So, I took my money back. They called me and tried to argue. I said " **** you, your problem."
Problem solved. [;)]

Very few things get lost, my day job is to track these kinds of things down for the USPS.
It's highly unlikely that someone would risk a decent paying job with benefits to steal something, it's probably sitting on the wrong shelf.
OR, the carrier went to redeliver it or it got placed with the outgoing mail and will be back again on Monday.

The best thing to do is to have your brother call the Post Office Monday morning between 7:30 and 9:30 am. That is when both the mailman and his supervisor will both be in the building and they can figure out where it got placed.

Is it an apartment building? They usually have a locked box for parcels to go in. Delivery confirmations do not have to be signed for, they are usually left at the delivery address.

Did you check the Delivery Confirmation scans at usps.com on the internet?
If it doesn't show a delivery it would be the sender's problem, not yours and you should not be responsible.

On the other hand, Insurance would have been about $7.00 and I think it's a good idea in case you had received it and some unforeseen accident had occurred in transit.

If your brother doesn't find it on Monday send me a PM with the your brother's name and address, the delivery confirmation # and the phone # of his local post office.
I'll call them on Tuesday.

Well, there you go, wait until July 3rd and you're good to go! [;)]

@Doitsujin: My brother paid for the RNP using paypal! Is there a way to cancel the payment (get a refund) after it has been deducted from his balance?
@Santiago: Thank you for your help. I'll ask my brother to call them on Monday! If they weren't able to find it, I'll let you know!
@ramparts: Sorry I meant June 2 and June 3 instead of July!!

Pgh_flamenco -> RE: FMR RNP Lost in Post Office (Jun. 9 2011 22:47:18)

Glad this eventually showed up and not surprised either. This has happened to me several times with USPS.

bassam_m -> RE: FMR RNP Lost in Post Office (Jun. 10 2011 10:55:46)

USPS informed my brother that they found my package and he picked it up!
I'll have my FMR RNP hopefully on June 21! I'll post some samples.

Thank you all for your help!
