I'm looking for ideas to spruce up my bulerias and give them a bit more groove, but I find it hard to actually do when I'm playing; i seem to fall back into the same strumming patterns.

Basically, I find I always accent beats 3,6,8,10 and 12 and either finish with rasgeado or simply index finger and golpes. Ive seen a lot of people do some funky remates and cool ways of ending on 9 or 11, just different things that sound modern give more aire. Lots upper golpes too which I like a lot.

I'm going to watch videos and try to come up with stuff on my own, but does anyone have any recommendations?

You can check out this vid. From 00:40 to 02:00, he show several ways to close a compas (beat 7 to 10).
It's not really well explain (indeed not at all) but it can gives you an idea of some variations...

Try playing more Jerez style patterns maybe, in 6s (they are shorter, less notes and usually easier to memorize but can be tricky rythmically sometimes) - there are bunch of variations really.
We should really start "Share your favorite bulerias compas patterns" thread IMO :)

Moraito is my favourite guitarist. My playing is *very* inspired by him. He plays great bulerias, with more aire than anyone else I've heard.

There is alot of inspiration to be had from him:







Not too difficult technically, but very much so rhythmically.

Thats awesome, just what Ive been looking for. Thanks for posting and sorry for the late response.

Im moving back to Vancouver, Canada, and have been busy getting everything together...the good news is that I plan on learning to accompany dance once Im there. Im looking forward to moving back to a place where I can go see a flamenco show at any time and there are lots of teachers!

Playing for a dance class is a good way to learn remates. If this is not possible, try searching "flamenco dance workshop" or "flamenco dance classes" on you tube. Look for videos of a few friends practicing some steps and try to play along.

Alternatively put on some solo compas and play along. Play up where you usually play down strokes. Be silent where you usually make sound. try being different until you find something. Force yourself to accent different beats like 4 or 11 etc.. Or accent the "4 and" etc... This will require you to learn to count as you play which is also very useful.

The key to rhythmic variations and groove in playing bulerias comes mainly from listening A LOT to records. That means you have to listen a lot a lot a lot a lot a lot. Listen to the same bulerias over and over and over and over and over and over... Then copy single compases and practice. Continuously do that, always. And eventually you can play bulerias compas variations and groove as you ever wanted but weren't able to.

Listening to singing accompaniment is very good a stated above.

But the major key is listen A LOT.
