Pimientito -> Officially nervous (May 3 2011 21:22:36)

Im not quite sure how I found myself in this situation. It started with Emilio asking if I would play a couple of pieces for a charity concert in aid of Japanese families who have been caught up in the earthquake and tsunami. I was quite honoured to be asked so of course I said yes. Now I have seen the full line up, posters are all over town and the reality of the situation is starting to sink in. I'm really excited but at the same time more than a little nervous now! ...gulp

Aweomse, Mark. Now how's about some "Shuey" candy? Or some chop "Shuey" perhaps? [:D]

[:D][:D] Actually compared to what they sent me the first time round its pretty close, only one letter missing.
Its a benefit concert for families in Japan affected by the earthquake and tsunami so I have decided to play 2 pieces, one from Granada and the other from Japan.
There is no way I'm going to compete in the gypsy palos with that line up so I probably will go for a granaina or Zambra...and the Sakura variations. At least that way there will be some variation in the program.
A lot of these guys like Sakay, Cheyenne, Petete and Rubem are friends anyway so hopefully I'll feel comfortable backstage before the show. Its a big theatre though and my first time on stage with such big names!!

Adam -> RE: Officially nervous (May 4 2011 14:18:53)

Any chance we'll see some of it on the YouTubes?

mrMagenta -> RE: Officially nervous (May 4 2011 15:11:00)

Quite some names there!

Your choice of material sounds great for this thing. I'm sure you will add very nicely to the whole. Enter with full confidence! Don't forget you are a high caliber chap by your own right. So enjoy! :-)

ack...I hate to be missing events like this.
so.. please arrange for someone to press the record button.

Ron.M -> RE: Officially nervous (May 4 2011 15:23:58)

Wow! Pimientito!!

That's a really impressive concert poster to keep in your CV folder, for sure!

Don't worry, I'm sure they'd never have asked you unless they already rated you as a player.

So have a good show and try to get some video!

cheers,

Ron

edguerin -> RE: Officially nervous (May 4 2011 15:59:13)

Kate -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 12:50:25)

The gig last night was fantastic. Three hours sped by with some fantastic dancing and cante and a wonderful mix of Japanese and local flamencos and of course our very own Pimientito. I can report that he pulled it off with aplomb, though sadly only time for one solo and wisely he chose a beautiful and poignant Japanese piece and got a fantastic reception from a very enthusiastic audience.

The show was difficult to stage in that there were so many artists on the bill but the organisers managed to cut it down to 3 hours and everyone got their chance to perform. The night started with all performers onstage and a back drop of images from the quake. Juan Santos of the Eshavira the shows producer welcomed everyone and asked for a minutes silence of the victims of both the japan quake and our recent tragedy in Lorca. The audience stood and you could have heard a pin drop. It set the scene for an emotive night.

It was a varied show ranging from flamenco piano, jazz flamenco, flamenco puro, and oddities such as Ruben Dantes playing a solo on thumb piano. The dancers all showed their personalities and talent with their chosen pieces and the Japanese dancers showed they could hold their own amongst the locals. Jaime el Parron sang better than I have heard for a long time proving that he has recovered from his throat operation. The duet with Juan Andres Maya and Ivan Vargas was stunning and ladies in the audience threw flowers. Pilar was gorgeous as always. Juan Habichuela played a storm and Pimiento managed to come on stage afterwards without a sign of the nervousness he must have been feeling. As luck would have Harold had just taken control on the sound desk and managed to push the volume for the harmonics section so it sang out like a bell. It was beautifully played and we were all very proud of him.

Kate -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 12:51:38)

PS we heard after the show that it was recorded by both Canal Sur and Japanese television. Pimiento's face was a picture later when he was told he had been going out live in Japan !!!!

xirdneH_imiJ -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 12:56:04)

wow!
congrats Pim!
any chance of watching that footage anywhere?

Pimientito -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 14:07:58)

Yeah, I got another friend to video it so we will edit that at the weekend.
It was an amazing experience but truly daunting. Imagine any of you guys reading this having to sit in a changing room for over 2 hours whilst guys like Ruben Dantes, Juan Habichuela, Juan Andres Maya and 30 other artists are putting on a major performance to a capacity filled theatre....and then you have to walk on stage after them and play a closing solo......

I still had adrenaline running through my legs this morning. I have never been so nervous for a performance. (with the possible exception of following Gerardo Nuñez and Ricardo in sanlucar) On top of everything I was playing Japanese music live for the first time. Anyway I'll write a bit more about the backstage antics at the weekend. Overall I am very pleased that it went well but Im going to relax and unwind a bit today.

P.S. Im so glad I found out about the Japanese TV after the concert and not before!

vuduchyld -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 14:46:12)

Wow!!! Very impressive!!! Can't wait to see some footage!

Congrats.... [:)]

Ron.M -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 19:04:50)

Absolutely BRILLIANT, Pim!!

cheers,

Ron

Pgh_flamenco -> RE: Officially nervous (May 13 2011 21:56:21)

Grats, Pim! Considering this performance and your BBC interview you might end up being a local legend back home.

Pimientito -> RE: Officially nervous (May 14 2011 14:11:02)

Experience is always a good thing

Yeah, I dont think money can buy that kind of experience. It was a really big night for me but very stressful. I had known I was going to play a solo spot for roughly a month and I already decided that it was going to be impossible to go up against the Habichuelas with a flamenco piece. My decision was to play a Zambra and the Sakura variations and I had been praticing like mad over the last couple of weeks.

On the day of the concert I found a clean suit, and walked to the theatre. Soundchecks were at 6.30. I went backstage and immediately found a scene of crazyness going on. The stage manager grabbed me and said "Great, another guitarist, which dancer are you with?"
I explained that I had already been asked to play a solo that was Japanese.
She looked at the program listing which was fast becoming a page of scribbles and lines. A lot of the artists on the bill hadnt turned up. To make matters more confusing, a lot of artists who WEREN'T on the bill had turned up to perform.
A team of Japanese girls were running round dressing room trying to change names on doors and supply everyone with drinks and sandwiches.
I was really hoping to play in the first half and definately before Juan Habichuela did his guitar solo.
"you cant play in the first half" I was told, "the tablao artists have to leave early...plus your piece fits better at the end, theres only time for one piece so you are playing the final solo before the fin de fiesta."
I suddenly felt a huge rush of adrenaline in my legs and a large desire to run away from the theatre...." you mean I have to follow those guys?"
She rushed me upstairs to the changing rooms. Percussionists were sitting in the hall practising on cajons. Guitarists were tuning up and going through scales and picados. Kids were running around and dancers were busy trying to sew flowers on to dresses and buckles on to shoes. Everyone was yelling at other and making the most noise possible.
Noone had a clue what was going on, what the order of show was, or even who would be accompanying who. I felt like a kid at the first day of school.
I tuned my guitar and went outside and immediately met up with Harold who joined me at a local bar.

Stage fright is a funny thing. I think there is a primal fear of facing a mob of people, a potentially dangerous situation. A little bit of nervous tension is not a bad thing for a musician to have before a performance. Adrenaline is secreted into the blood from glands above the kidneys. In small quantities it raises heart rate, increases concentration, improves memory and quickens reflexes....all useful stuff. The problem is that if nervousness turns to fear, adrenaline becomes your enemy. I felt blood circulating in my legs preparing me to run, my stomach and intestine wanted to empty to make my getaway faster, my hands were sweating as my hands prepared to fight and got hotter. I was conciously aware of these changes in my body but seemed unable to do anything to control them. I needed to calm down and get a glass of wine.
Alcohol can calm your nerves but dont take too much or your reflexes and timing dissappear again. Taking all these things into account I decided that 2 stiff drinks would probably do the trick and I started to feel much better, at least my legs stopped going wobbly.

By now the concert was starting so I went back inside the dressing rooms. Juan Habichuela was going thrrought the most complex and fast set of picado patterns. It was really amazing to watch and I kind of forgot for a while why I was there. I was definately calmer. I watched the show on the monitors until finally it was my turn to go on stage.

Waiting off stage seemed like an eternity, I fought off the adrenaline and walked onstage. Someone in the audience shouted "Pimientiiiiito!!" and I smiled and felt a bit better. The first chords of the piece were difficult. I could feel my fingers shaking. I played a wrong note in the introduction which put me off for a second and got a technical change wrong in the ligado section. However, the harmonics went well and by now I was more relaxed and starting to enjoy the piece, the third variation went well...The tremelo section came off my fingers as practiced...a few more notes and finish on a big chord....huge applause and I was ready to take my bow and leave. "remember to bow " I thought to myself "dont rush off stage"

Later I found out it was televised and I was genuinely buzzing for the next day.
The biggest lesson I learned about this gig was controling nerves and adrenaline. There comes a time when you just have to go through it. With so many friends in the audience and backstage it was impossible to back out. I think after this it has given me confidence to play almost anywhere because its doubtful that I would find myself in a more pressured situation.
