How much does the scale length really matter, and what are the advantages/disadvatages.

The standard scale length is 650mm, there are some makes that offer 655mm guitars, as well as other variations (I've seen everything from 648mm to 660mm). How does this change the guitar acoustically and playability wise.

I know that the same string, if put on a longer scale would require higher tension to produce the same pitch. But does that realy make a difference? Considering that going from 650 to 655 is less then 1%?

I had a guitar once with 667 scale and 63mm across the strings at the bridge saddle. Impossible to compare.
You'd have to have the exact same guitar at a different scale to identify any difference in quality of sound or energy level.
Only thing I found was that she was noticeably more difficult to play although the wide fan of the strings helped me with picado practice.
Industry standard seems to have settled on 650 but for me a longer scale feels better.

Cheers
Jim.

I totally agree here. I've build 650, 655 and 660 scales, and to be honest, I think there are so many other factors influencing in the feel of a guitar and that it's difficult to seperate them and say: well this is the reason for that.

The 650 industry standard is because of its was dictated by spanish factories. 650 is Spanish standard, but if you read old books about guitars and guitar building, you'll see that 650 was considered short outside Spain.

63mm stringspacing at the bridge, weel this you feel, and that's BIG.
