Snake oil.

A properly constructed tornavoz is different.

Well I don’t know if I would call it “snake oil”.

This devise actually has a long history back to Torres. Torres used a “Tornavoz”. A Tornavoz is a tube extending from the back of the sound hole, ending just short of the back of the guitar. You see similar cones in speaker enclosures. What it does is lower the frequency of the enclosure. The O port is somewhat like a Tornavoz, but made out of plastic.

The O Port only cost a few bucks, so I gave it a try. It does tend to richen the basses, but it mudded up the mids, which is bad news for a flamenco. I could hear a difference, just not to my liking. I hear they do work well on steel strings to mellow them out.

Oh, and Torres gave up on the Tornavoz in his later guitars.

Here’s a picture of a Tornavoz.
