VietFlamenco -> Guitar for kids (Apr. 19 2011 22:45:17)

My little nephew is turning 9 years old next month and I'm planning on buying him a flamenco guitar as well as starting him on lessons. He's one of the biggest kids in his 3rd grade class. My question is, should I be looking into getting him a full size guitar or one of those mini kids guitar. Also, should I set up the guitar for low tension strings since kids have a very low tolerance for finger blisters.

I was thinking of getting him the Yamaha CG171SF. Is this still a good buy or has the quality of the manufacturing gone downhill?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I dont know anything much about the yamaha guitars, but i think you can go with a full size guitar, he is going to be growing alot soon[:D]

Medium tension sounds good blisterwise i guess, but they might be hard to control for smaller hands, for example they might drag them so it becomes a bend or the strings touch eachother, so maybe let him try your guitar first or something, to check his hand size?

I think i saw Jason Mcguire's student playing a full size guitar at a younger age, he still is a kid too, also grisha i think.. Maybe starting with a full size will make it seem smaller when he grows and makes it even easier for him to play at an older age, since he will be used to the stretch allready, allowing for incredible flexibility.

By the way, great to buy him a guitar, hope he will keep the interest up, no doubt he will become very good if he does![:D]

I think you hit the nail on the head there, Odinz...

He has facial tics, and odd-looking teeth (pointy things, I believe they're called Hutchinson teeth) - I have a feeling he's got some neuro-psych-related problems... Or so it seems. [8|]

I'm probably just rambling... He's fine, most likely. I hope.

If he will practice like that, i think you should be happy no matter what he is wearing, should have the arm sleeve thing too(what is that thing anyway?)

So you don't sweat (from your arm) onto the guitar and ruin the finish over time.

The CG171SF is a full-sized guitar and it's been discontinued. If you're buying this one used, I'd say the quality for the price is still good.

I don't know anything much about the new CG172SF. I haven't seen one place in the SF Bay Area that carries it.

Just take him over to the Berkeley Musical Instrument Exchange and see what George and Will can find that suits him. Maybe they have a good used flamenco guitar that he can start on. Some of their customers trade-up from time-to-time.

I just spoke with guitar center and they said I can still order a CG171SF with a 30 day money back guarantee. Probably try that route before I think about ordering the CG172SF from Amazon.

Been meaning to visit Berkeley Music Exchange for a while now. Just wish I could give my nephew my Francisco Navarro Blanca and be over with it, but kids don't do too well with pegs.

Take it with you to BME. Maybe you can trade it in for something.

I've seen your Navarro and have been tempted to call you and drive over. But I keep a limit on the number of guitars in this house.
