Dennis, The diagonal braces in my new layout create more stiffness in the top across the grain. Combined with a thin top this makes a really lively guitar with potent, clear trebles and a crisp, percussive sound. However, the piece of wood that I selected for M.T.'s top is pretty exceptional in that the natural cross-grain stiffness of the wood is the highest I've ever seen in a piece of spruce. It's from the Caucuses mountains. Also, the density is the lowest I've seen. I felt that to accentuate the exceptional qualities of that top, I had to brace it really minimally across the grain, so I arrived at just 5 slightly splayed fan braces. (picture below) It's still as stiff as my more heavily braced tops and very lightweight! I think it will be really responsive.
