Hi Rumbaking,

A few years ago I tried to get an instrument insured, so it exist, but the rules to pay me when it was lost, burned, stolen, where so much that it was in fact only insured in the house.
Not for instance in a car, left alone in a hotel room, on the street, etc etc.

Indeed. I have my €3500 guitar insured, if stolen, broken, if it gets broken on a flight or even if I break it myself I get €3500 paid out - no matter where in the world it happens. I only pay just under €80 a year. Cheap and very much worth it.

I'm in Germany, there must be a similar insurance where you are.

I've had a policy with Heritage (Traveler's) for the last five years. I got it when I was about to go on tour with a rock band and my gear was being used by my bandmates. Our uHaul trailer was stolen in San Francisco and I provided the Heritage with a police report the next day. About three weeks later, I got a check. No hassle at all. My policy insures up to 25k, I think (I have about 23k insured) and runs around $300 a year. It covers theft regardless of where the theft occurs. It also covers damages if you drop your guitar on stage, for example.

I've got everything covered, from instruments to Monster cables to microphones. The only items that they won't insure are laptops and recording software.

I'm actually in the insurance business and the correct way to insure your instruments is through a "musical instrument schedule" on your homeowners or renters policy. Typically they will cover your instruments at a replacement cost or agreed value with no deductible. The only caveat is that some insurers may not allow for professional use and some others might surcharge for professional use. I have my guitars scheduled so I don't have to worry at a gig about someone stepping on it or getting it stolen; well actually I worry about that but at least I know I have some coverage in the event a disaster occurs.

I would highly recommend anyone with an expensive or rare instrument to have it scheduled as the basic home policy gives little or no coverage and only on named perils...

No way, man! I was joking... My friends HATE me because I never let them play my guitar. And if they catch me off guard and take it to try it out, they find I am hovering all around them to make sure they don't accidentally hit it against a chair or wall or something...

I'm happy to say my Ramirez R1 (albeit classical) is still probably in mint condition ever since I bought it seven years ago. I just can't deal with people that smash their guitar up all over the place and say they don't care, because it still sounds good.
