britguy -> Staying in tune??? (Apr. 6 2011 14:25:15)

I have a relatively new(3-months) hand-built flamenco negra guitar that seems to lose tune much faster than my other guitars. All are stored in a humidity-controlled room. The trebles, especially the high E, seem to drop almost a full tone overnight. And it seems to happen with several brands (and tensions) of strings.

What is considered a normal pitch drop for quality custom guitars, with broken-in strings, over (say) a 24 hour period?

And what could cause this guitar to drop so much in a few hours? Could it be faulty tuning heads? Or what?

Luthiers will probably be the best to answer this as many of them do tune ups and repairs so I'm sure they've had a wide range of experiences.

But I had this problem on my 2 guitars. But before I go there, while searching for my favorite strings I have found that different brands take much longer to tune than others. My 2 personal extremes are Savares Alliance, they never reach a tuned state, they die before. My favorite Gali Titanium within a few days they stay tuned and last forever.

The problem I had on both of mine was actually because I switched to the Gali, they have a much thicker G string and the slot in both the nuts was too tight for them so they were getting pinched. Filing these wider corrected the problem.
Apart from that, I rarely need to tune once the strings are streched.

Providing the guitar has settled down, then it's usually strings expanding an
contracting, or stretching. If I feel the temperature changing in the room, sure
enough the guitar goes out of tune. Rather maddening when the wife is twiddling
with the thermostat.

I notice my better guitars go out of tune faster than my el-cheapo Yamaha. So
perhaps it's a function of the lighter built guitar.

Regards,
Jeff
