I'm only working on Solea right now and I'm at a point where I would like to tap the accents instead of each beat. It would be very helpful to do that for holding compas. But it's hard, I pretty much have to watch the metronome and tap my foot at the right spot but I can't even do that without messing up my playing.

I guess it's like everything else, you have to practice that specifically?
Is that how you get to being able to do this?

What my teacher did to get my used to tapping my foot while playing is by playing palmas.

For solea clap this with the metronome

12 1 a 2 3 4 a 5 6 7 a 8 9 a 10 11
Clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap
foot foot foot foot foot

Do that until you are comfortable, then starting playing really slow. It helps to count it out loud at first too

I never paid much attention to my foot tapping. Mine is super chaotic and anarchic. I'm not even sure i tap on the right accent while playing.
I don't think it's very important (at least for me)

Just my 2 cents [&:]

BUT while doing palmas practice, which is very important to feel and internalize the compas, then i'm super aware of the correct foot tapping.

I was curious because I tap at each beat and just follow the music but in one spot, I tend to add an extra beat, so I let the 12th beat ring for 2 and then I'm out of compas. So I thought if I tapped on accents it would help because I would know I'm at 12. But I just need to get that part straight in my head and get rid of what musically sounds nice to me by adding this beat.

hey mate.. I think if you have problem tapping to each beat then you would have even more trouble tapping to just the 3/6/8/10/12 because of the uneven beat spacing between those accents..
Solea is really slow so it's pretty easy to tap each beat.. maybe just keep at it till you get it all inside u?

Tapping to each beat is easy, no problem with that. Another to explain the problem is that I am only keeping rhythm when I am tapping, the majority of the time I know where beats 1 and 7 are because the form is very standard solea but in one particular place, at beat 12, I find that adding a one beat sustain, a pause if you want, makes the whole thing sound nicer. It's at that point that I need to know that I'm not on 11 but 12 and that I have to move on to stay in compas.

I think you should take one simple compas pattern and find out, where the accents are, and remember them and play tapping your foot with them. Think more about the melody, not the timing. Start without the metronome, and when you will be sure what you do, play with metronome. After some time of repetition it will be ready. Then you can mowe to another compas pattern or falseta. Every next one will be easier.
