Hey Folks,

Have been listening to loads of PDL lately (who hasn't) and was just browsing some instructional stuff in some webshop. Found a DVD by Juan Serrano called (wait for it..) Flamenco Guitar and previewed a track from it. I noticed it's the EXACT same thing that appears on PDL's Fantasia Flamenca as a tune called "Mantilla de Feria", only on Serrano's DVD it has a different title.
What's up with that? Has one of these guys been stealing from the other or is this tune so commonplace that you can just name it anything you want?

I think it was written by Esteban de Sanlúcar, so they didn't steal from each other, there have been many renditions of this compositions by Paco de Lucía, Paco Peña amongst others.

Paco de Lucia also has this track on Entre Dos Aguas as well as on Fantasia Flamenca.
Rafael Riqueni has a version on the Maestros CD.
Juan Serrano has his titled the some as the others (Mantillas De Feria) on his Flamenco Guitar album.
I am sure there are more.
What palos is that? It's "pleasant" but that's about it for me.

Yes, it's also on Entre Dos Aguas, but that's a compilation album and it has the same title there. Very interested in the other versions as well. Not that it's my fave tune but I like to compare what different players do with it.

Hey Ramparts, after further investigation I found a PDL-technique lesson site where the webmaster is being credited for writing Mantilla de Feria for Sanlucar...getting confused now[8D]

elek you probably saw R-Diaz youtube video where he got a boner coz he found similarities between Rio Ancho and Vicente Amigos tres notas... In the end (at least in that example) its a complete different composition. Who cares where he constructed that from? Thats how it works with everything. You take what others have, and go from there. Thats the right way.
Its a nice side effect that some people get orgasms from finding such connections. xD

I would sooner assume that any PDL composition or falseta that is similar to Juan Serrano is probably coming from Ricardo or another source that influenced them both.

I believe Paco is only ten years younger than Juan. I think Paco was born in 1947, and Juan was born in 1937.
