Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for guitar teachers in London.

I've played guitar for about 15 years, but always more indie/rock/electronic music. I pretty much stopped all that and played very little for the last two years but have now bought a flamenco guitar and am starting to learn. My partner is Spanish and she never even introduced me to flamenco properly until recently!

I've seen ads for teachers but they also offer other styles too. That kind of makes me wonder if they really know flamenco? Learning flamenco feels like almost starting again even though I can play other styles well. Whilst I was self taught before I think I'd benefit from some lessons to set me on the right path but don't want to waste money on someone who doesn't really know what they're talking about as far as flamenco goes. Just worried they offer flamenco as one of a bunch of styles they claim to teach and most beginners don't know the difference or not of that teacher is actually a really good flamenco guitarist. The fact that I've played a long time and have been learning flamenco already means I can see through some of them.

So, if anyone has any recommendations they'd be very welcome.

Ramon Ruiz is a good teacher http://www.fiestaflamenca.com/guitar_courses.htm and is the real deal.

Thanks for the recommendation. Just looked at his site and definitely looks better than some of the people I've seen advertising.

Antonio Francisco

Here's his website and a couple of youtube links of him playing his own solo compostions. Of course he is very knowledgeable about all aspects of flamenco not just solo.

I too can recommend Antonio Francisco... I've worked with him in the past (back in the late 1980s) and he is a very good player and I've heard that his teaching technique (pedagogy) is second to none.

I've been taking lessons from Francisco for more than two years now. He's very knowledgeable and knows how to teach (bear in mind that one can be a good player but not a good teacher necessarily). He's not bothered by how long a session takes. He doesn't teach you pieces as such; he teaches you the structure of each form (chords, accompaniment, compass, etc) through a study piece.
