What's your budget? There are SO many preamps available. Also, are you a Mac or a PC? [:D]

OK that helps narrow it down - when you said "best" I thought you might be looking for something top shelf. $300 is on the low end for preamps, but you can definitely get some excellent gear at that price. My recommendation would be to look for a used Apogee Duet. It's a 2chan pre with +48v phantom, and sounds excellent IMO. I haven't used one in a live situation, but for home recording on a Mac it's hard to beat.

Hello,
I would suggest using a mixer toaccomplish what you are looking for. I have a Mackie 402-VLZ3 that I use plugged into an active loudspeaker. I mic the guitar with a shure condencer mic on a small boom stand. Yamaha also makes some mixers that are in your range. The Mackie has 2 channel EQ which has worked fine for me as well.

good suggestion by jlneng.

i have this one. the 9 band eq is an awesome feature. it's got compression and a low cut filter too. AND it works as an audio interface.

very versatile but the preamp is obviously not as good as the more expensive, dedicated preamps.

Hi,
I have a Mackie 1202 mixer approx 8" square that has phantom power, preamp, eq, effects loop etc. It is in perfect condition. Send me a PM with your shipping info and I'll send it to you. Send me 30.00(thirty US) to cover shipping and my fast food lunch during my drive back from UPS... If you want it of course. This is worth more but I never use it and you seem like a good cause.[:)] There is no USB, it is more oldschool.

If you are out for a long-term solution ( = a device you wouldn´t want to replace in the future ), I would like to recommend as below.

Many brands listed mainly produce entry- to mid-level consumer gear, especially in the named price range.

A sonic level that you will get along with until you start comparing tracks with major production ones. Usually one then gets out again, invests some more, until some time later buying somethings else ... and so on.

I like many others too went that way. Initially invested 3000 DM ( deutsche Mark back then ) and ended up with 90 000 €. One gets addicted as hearing ( of audio ) progresses.

But sometimes, though seldomly you can bypass such an od(d)ysee without even spending big amounts.
In terms of transparent peramplification that would be obtaining this very device.

To be found here http://www.davelectronics.com/bg1.htm#

This pre is of professional standard.
Yet, until a couple of years ago it used to cost around 500 bucks and I suppose that the humble man who manufactures these devices to have not changed his remarkable pricing too much.

In the audio engeneereing community the "Big No.1" gained a lot of attention, years ago.
We compared it with up to extremely expensive preamps and have been exceptionally content of what it delivers despite the little budget.
Some preferred other builds, naturally, yet within hairsplitting range of highly specialized demand and individual taste.
What remained is that the D.A.V. holds its own against top shelf competition, which means something phenomenal.

There exists little to nothing in the world of audio gear that managed such a price to quality ratio.
It is no eye candy as some Avalon or thelikes, but highly refined ingenousity in a simple box. An electronic cinderella.

Should you have a rental in your city, rent it together with other makes, keep environment and signal level paramater, make some takes and compare attentively.
You will be happily surprised.
