Don Dionisio -> Ricardo Marlow-amazing concert! (Feb. 28 2011 15:46:53)

This is my first post on this forum. I am the program director of the Triangle Guitar Society in NC. We presented Ricardo Marlow in concert with Naito and Hector Marquez this past Friday in Chapel Hill, NC. What a concert!!
The first half was solo guitar mostly pieces from Ricardo's great CD 'Madera Sonora'. He also included a beautiful Tarantas and a Granaina, which are not on the album. His playing was not only flawless, it was full of aire. In my opinion, he is an all around first-rate musician.
The second half was guitar and cante. If I remember correctly, they did a Solea por Bulerias, Alegrias, Bulerias, Sevillanas. The two singers were also quite good and added another dimension to an already fabulous show.
If you have the opportunity to see him or present him in concert-do it!
All the best to everyone,
Dennis

Uh huhhh. Very nice, Ricardo! [:D][:D]

Kidding. Sounds like a great concert. Hopefully he'll play a bit in Sanlúcar this summer too!

Thanks for that, Dennis,

Ricardo is a good, sincere player and I like his work a lot.

Though he is regularly in demand for concerts and lessons, he's not above getting involved in the Forum and videoing non-practised stuff to show a quick example of a particular point of technique, without any BS presentation or attitude..

That's a pretty secure player who can do that..IMO anyway.

Folk here should get his CD themselves and they will see what I mean.

cheers,

Ron

Ricardo Marlow was my introduction to flamenco 17 years ago and was my inspiration to pick the instrument back up again after an 8 year hiatus. He is an amazing player and a pretty good dude as well :) Glad he is out and around killin it

Ok. It wasn’t as bad as I remembered. [8D] This was a stressful gig for a number of unusual reasons. First, mid pandemic I was not playing this repertoire on a regular basis for a long time. But the real stress was due to the gas crisis in the DC area that was going on this week. Hilarious news videos of people pumping gas into trash bags etc, were making the rounds. This was in VA beach area, so a 4 hour drive from DC. And the pumps were dry! I was worried i was not going to make it down there, and the gentleman talking at the start was prepared to give this concert for me if I could not find gas along the way. I headed out that morning and got lucky just outside of town and filled the tank. So I made it down there. But the other problem was a physical one. I had suffered from Frozen shoulder on my right arm (an incident throwing the wet tennis ball with the dogs near the pool triggered adhesive capsulitis), which was very painful. This time period I had this thing, the right arm feels “short” playing a big body guitar, only the skinny guitar was comfortable. It was loosening up by this point (from October 31 2020 till April 2021 I could not get my right hand into my back pocket!), but sitting and playing this way was still uncomfortable and psychological interfering with playing well. I feel about half way through this thing I was really not feeling good. I had not watched this video, having blocked this whole time out of my mind. Thanks for digging it up. [:D]

AndresK -> RE: Ricardo Marlow-amazing concert! (Jan. 22 2024 13:28:03)

Wow, you played 100 times better than I ever play on concerts and you had uncontrollable pain in your shoulder too? !? Now I feel even worse about my abilities[:D]

This frozen shoulder thing was also something that gave a really hard time for 2 years to the luthier of my guitar. I remember talking to him on the phone those days and he was going through a lot of pain in just everyday simple tasks.

Glad you are out of this now. Thanks for the inspiration as always!

Manitas de Lata -> RE: Ricardo Marlow-amazing concert! (Jan. 22 2024 20:41:20)

sorry Ricardo :)

You seem to warm up along the session , the acoustic of the place wasnt your friend, not ideal , still great performance and respect for the people.
I love this kind of gig , with some talk, educate the listeners and storytelling

I ****ed up my shoulder that was allready ****ed up many years ago , i know how it feells , still know..
Thats why i changed to medium tension , helped a lot.
