Henrik.

You can fly from Copenhagen to Malaga with Maersk-air quite cheap if it is outside hollydays and on weekdays. Normally around 110, - euros return excl. taxes. But sometimes even cheaper. I got a return last year for 70, - Euros excl. taxes.

From Malaga its around 150 km to Granada.

Please give me a call, or even better mail me if you're around.

I had exactly the same problem with my D'addario J49 strings (the ones with black coloured trebles). Not sure if they're composites, but I think so. Nasty metallic sound! It took about 6 hours of non-stop playing to break them in. After that though, they sound good. I also have a set of La Bella 820 strings too, but I have yet to test them...

Did you find a stockist for these in the UK? I'd be interested to know where.

TIA.

Jon

PS These are not even listed on D'Addario's website. Weird.

JBASHORUN -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 22 2005 14:37:23)

Jon,
happy to oblige. Yeah, they are quite hard to track down- for some reason not everyone sells them. I did one of my comprehensive searches and found several UK stockists... www.strings4pleasure.co.uk (£7.22) and www.highlystrung.co.uk (£7.50) amongst others.
But the cheapest I could find them for was £7.00 (plus £1.17 postage) from www.guitarandampshop.co.uk . I think this is still pretty expensive for strings considering the La Bella 820s are available for about £5 from www.stringbusters.com .
I did find the J49s even cheaper from a german website www.saitenkatalog.de for only 7.95 Euros (about £5), but their standard European shipping rate is 9 Euros (more than the strings!) so unless you order 3 or 4 sets (shipping still 9 Euros), it may not be worth it.

Alternatively you can buy them from the Chappells music store in Bond Street, London... but be warned that they charge £10 per set!

James

Nope. According to stringsbymail, they are the same basses as the J45 and the trebles are nylon.

I think all Daddario basses tend to be a bit "nosy" in the sound. Even after break-in

My favorite set is (these days): J49 1st and second, med tension Daddario third composite and Savarez corum basses.

This set looks ugly though.

that counts. [;)]

Yeah, what Todd said. After all, cantaors aren't normally noted for their looks.

flyeogh -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 22 2005 16:36:14)

Don't listen to them Anders. A flamenco guitar is a thing of beauty even if the guy holding on to it is as ugly as sin! (A personal view based on mirror observation - I'm sure Todd and Miguel .... blah, blah ..).

Does anyone think two pages is enough on this one???? I ticked send me Email for each update and now my inbox is full!!!![:-]

duende -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 22 2005 17:31:13)

To go to Granada is still only an idea. Nothing planed yet. We´re sort of looking around for diffrent places, but since im into flamenco i don´t really want to go anywhere else but Andalucia[:D] If/when were going it will be around 25 june or july. Around there somewhere

Well, maybe not quite...but it reminded me of sitting in a bar in Madrid with this guitarist who said "Look at all the guitarists...they are all miserable with big serious faces, meanwhile the singers and dancers are all enjoying themselves".
That thought still makes me laugh!
(Actually seeing the "Francisco Sánchez" video the other day just confirmed that! LOL!)

cheers

Ron

Miguel de Maria -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 22 2005 21:55:24)

Ron,
that is what I noticed in Spain. It seemed terrible...you had this geeky, boring guys with guitars, frowing in the corner, with the extroverted and fun singers and dancers jumping around. I resolved not to be like those guitarists!

Not all, though...Eduardo Rebollar, Nino Jero, for a couple are fun to watch.

Good idea. Flamenco guitarists can be very boring to look at. It's like there is a rule that says that it's forbidden to smile and have fun when you play flamenco.

Strings. They look ugly. But it is my favorite set so they are in use. I'm totally addicted to that light brown Daddario 3rd string, but why this color?????

Granada: I will be here in June and July (more or less) August will be hollydays for me (I think).

Nice playing

Anders,
Can you remember the product code for the light brown strings? (Eg. J46, J47, J48, etc.).

thanx. Apparently theres a flamenco festival in stockholm in august[:D][:D][:D][:D]
Can´t wait!!

Kate -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 25 2005 14:21:12)

http://www.sacai.se/

Here' the link for it, sacai means eye in Calo. Unfortunately I cant understand a word of the rest, so if you can translate it and tell me who to contact about it, would love to send promo for Granada artists, if not this year maybe next.

Emilio is playing eth Berlin Flamenco festival at the beginning of August, as well as giving classes there, but it would be great to get him on at Stockholm as well if possible. So any info in English appreciated.

Kate

Guest -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 25 2005 15:41:06)

Hi Kate.

Is there anything special you want to know? It doesn't say much about the festival, and there is no link or telephone number, and there's no mail adress to the organisation either.

I think you should send a mail in english to one of the following adresses:

sacai@flamenco.se a link for buying tickets to Diego el Cigala and Bebo Valdes, but the addres makes me think there's more behind.

aasara@hotmail.com It's a link to a flamenco newspaper. She should know who to contact. I think there's still time arrange something.

Besides, I just wanna say that swedish is a very beautifull language that you should learn[8D]
I hope you enjoy the fine spring weather and the processions downtown. Up here, in the mountains, everything is fine.

Se you
Anders

Kate -> RE: One last "What guitar to buy" thread, I really need help! (Mar. 25 2005 15:50:51)

Anders, you're a star had forgotton you are Swedish. I'll drop them a line and of course let you know if anything comes of it, or if I need more translation. Would love to learn Swedish, but like Norwegian ( which Harold speaks a bit after living there for years) and Welsh, Icelandic, and many more I 'm not sure when I would use it. Its gonna take me a lifetime to learn Spanish as she is really spoken as it is. Also am trying to keep my French up to scratch and learn Morrocan so think Swedish will have to wait for another lifetime. Thanks so much for the info on the Swedish flamenco festival, interesting to see it was funded by the Junta Andalucia. Also see Hamburg has started a flamenco festival and of course Berlin as I mentioned before. All good news for flamenco.

Kate

Hi Kate,

No offense. My name is 100% Swedish because my family comes from Sweden some 2 generations back. I can also teach you some Danish if you want. It's quite fun, especially for teacher[8D]

Se you.

Is it true that Finns are very talkative?

Yes am sure you would have a great laugh teaching me Danish, just like the kids teaching me to sing fandangos !!!

Hope its not too cold and wet in the mountains. All the cobbles here in the Albaicin are sprouting grass with all the much needed rain. Sorry the Gitanos prcession was cancelled though. That's the one I enjoy most.

See you down here sometime

Kate

Nope Mike,
I heard this story where two Finnish guys go into a bar and order a couple of beers.
They both drain their glasses in silence, then one of them looks at the other and says " Fancy another?"
To which he replies, "Look...did you come here to drink or talk?"

[:D][:D][:D]
