rombsix -> Classical guitar VERSUS flamenco guitar (Feb. 25 2011 21:13:45)

Was just wondering (because of a classical guitar project I was invited to work on, then didn't end up doing for some twisted rubbish) whether the advanced pieces of the classical guitar repertoire are harder TECHNICALLY than the advanced pieces of the flamenco guitar repertoire (disregarding rhythm and compas).

I'm not talking about a particular technique like lightning-speed picado, but rather about technique in general (both left and right hand).

Personally, I feel that the LEFT hand is much harder when it comes to the advanced classical guitar pieces, but the right hand is always harder when it comes to advanced flamenco pieces.

Thoughts?

agreed...there was a new part of Grisha's interview up on youtube today and he said that classical can be really-really difficult...but i'm sure he means left hand work, i can't imagine anything more difficult than flamenco when it comes to right hand :)

I have a strong feeling that you are. [8D][:D]

Part 7: He wants flamenco be played by classical guitarists? That doesn´t work. It would be hell boring... And they would lack many techniques you need for flamenco. Thats not possible. Only hybrids like Grisha work fine for that.. But I couldnt belive that a 100% classical guitars could play a compositions with rasguados at all.

ToddK -> RE: Classical guitar VERSUS flamenco guitar (Feb. 25 2011 23:08:11)

Notice in the interview he says "Classical, FOR ME, is harder to play because etc etc etc..."

We all have natural tendancies for different things. What seems more difficult to one person, seems easy to another.

This type of conversation is a wild goose chase. It never ends.

I felt like chasing some wild geese actually, now that I'm eating oranges and kiwis, still awake at 2:23 AM (overdid my siesta today [8D]). So there you go, maestro ToddK. [:D]

Flamenco guitar is about accompanying singers, classical guitar is about making the guitar sing.

Both can be done without being overburdened with a technical preoccupation.
It's about being musical at every level of technique each person has at the time.

yes. I also thought that... this discussion leads to nothing. Maybe to a certain degree he has to say that. Also when he showed with his arms that classic is much bigger and has much more to offer than flamenco.. If he wouldnt brown-nose a little with the classic world..he wouldnt get anny attention from this side I guess.

I'm guessing this is a joke, but I don't get it. Remind me of what you're alluding to... [8D][:)] (so much medical information coming in, some memories are going out)

Nothing, it just seemed easy. I've never actually experienced you being wrong. [8D][;)]

Paul Magnussen -> RE: Classical guitar VERSUS flamenco guitar (Feb. 26 2011 17:03:53)

Leaving aside other considerations, a lot of classical guitar music is written by pianists whose understanding of the guitar varies from slight to nonexistent. One need look no further for an example than Manuel Ponce, whose music Segovia had to make all sorts of changes to before it was even playable.

Other pieces are transcribed from other instruments, such as 'cello or violin.

On the other hand, Flamenco is composed by guitarists for guitarists. So I was say Yes, comparing the most difficult pieces in each genre, classical definitely has it.

If you doubt this, try the following:

Bach: Chaconne, arr. Segovia
Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez
Rodrigo: Invocation & Dance
Barrios: Danza Paraguaya (Barrios was a guitarist but he had huge hands)
Ernesto Halffter: Danza de la Pastora

I could go on…

That could prove the endless diffuculties that expect the flamenco guitarist!

Not the normal one, though. [8D]
