Kevin James Shanahan -> making money (Feb. 24 2011 23:22:13)

ok things are getting desperate for me now , I need to make money . I live in a remote part of australia , that is I don't have potential venues within two hours driving wich cancels out the fee to play in expenses . Does anyone have any sugestions as to how I can make money , I am a good player and am dedicated to improvement . Do online guitar lessons pay? How about virtual gigs? online collaboration ? I really would apreciate some Ideas thx .[:(]

As a business consultant, my strong advice to you is to look beyond the world of flamenco in your quest to make money.

Perhaps you can make some eventually, but please don't rest your hopes on it.

hey Kevin,
greetings from adelaide.
have you thought of a web based/skype/webstream type tuition to regional areas in australia? via schools or home schooling... ie Alice springs, Broome etc...
it may get support from dept of education, so some funding or grant might be out there....
as far as performing maybe an act or solo which works the festival circuit of this country..
organizations such as Playing Australia or the Austalia council have grant applications and potential for development..
good luck..understand the dilemma...

I understand your dilemma - I spent 3 years living in Northern NSW, and pretty much had a break from gigging when I was there, except when I was near Byron Bay and got some cafe/pub gigs. If your heart is set on making a career out of guitar, it might be worth considering moving closer to a city (of course not knowing your full situation and how easy or hard this might be). A career with guitar is possible then, especially if you are willing to do some private teaching at schools. I'm not sure how far you are from Byron, but there were definitely some gigs to be had when I was there in the early-mid 90s. The skype thing might be good as long as the internet connection is good out there.
Good luck!

A friend of mine in Holland has started putting his own gigs on at home, a private juerga with some drinks thrown in. He does this once a month and gets booked up each time. Just a thought, good luck !
