Last year I got asked to play at some parties with a dancer and we did some gigs that worked out quite well. There was usually a make shift stage of boards or wooden floor however. However the biggest problem with an outdoor gig is staging especially if you are playing in a venue in the middle of nowhere with a concrete or tiled floor. I made the mistake of using a couple of hardwood doors as staging in one event but the dancer destroyed them by halfway through the first choreography.
Does anyone here have portable staging that they can put in the car for dance gigs? If so what is it made of? how do you set it up?
The problem with boards is that they come apart while the dancer is hammering away on them. Also large boards are heavy and difficult to get in a car. There must be an easier way of setting up a stage suitable for a dancer that can fit into the back of a car.

Anyone with experience of this please let me know and post some photos or technical drawings or something. Many thanks. P

this has worked well for me. it takes a bit to set up but it's sturdy and reliable.

The problem with doors is that they are usually hollow inside, so that doesn't work. Years ago when I did an act with dancers I constructed a makeshift dance floor out of masonite. It's thin and lightweight, so it's easy to transport. The shiny side is hard and takes taconeo without any problem.

We used four 4x4 pieces to make an eight by eight floor. We rigged up fan bracing underneath (Torres) (just kidding – it was a wood frame with cross bracing) across the seams to hold it together, and it could be put together and taken apart fairly easily. I had a station wagon at the time, so I don't know if this would fit in the trunk of a car, but it might fit in the back seat.

Thank guys...Im going to keep on this thread though to save confusion.
Ed- that staging looks perfect but at 185 euro per square meter (without shipping) I am looking more at the ideas that leo has posted.

Leo, thats ideal and looks great. I am grateful you photographed the experiments and mentioned noise reduction. I am still abit conused as to assembley of the stage on the day. Do you have to screw anything together? what stops the pieces coming apart from each other while the dancer is dancing?

the bungee cords keep everything together. no screws or hinges.

the pieces slip into one another like a puzzle piece. there are pieces of wood attached to each section of the floor sticking out and when they're put together, they slip into each other kind of like how a zipper works.

i assemble it upside down then carefully flip it over.

it's a simple concept but it's hard to explain. i'll have to make a drawing.
