Just kidding. Was anyone else there last night? I thought the show was fabulous though the sound balance wasn't always great.

A very fair assessment, though I would mark Emilio Maya down a bit on the hair front.
I was in the stalls and I think the lung power of the big gitano that was singing was too much for the sound system. Again, it might have been the amplification but I did notice one or two bits of picado that Tomatito would probably have preferred to play a bit more cleanly. I didn't get as much out of the Michel Camilo end of his repertoire but when they got that compas going... you could have knocked down walls with it. The great joy for me was to hear so many letras that I associate with Camaron - I can't remember them all now 'con el mayor enemigo del mundo...' AND a personal favourite, 'yunque clavo, jaca jaca...' (it's off of Te lo dice) I never thought I would hear that coming off a stage with Tomatito on it. All of this with Camaron era falsetas. In London I go to flamenco shows more in hope than in expectation but last night was a memorable one. Toma ya.

I Thought it was a 12/10 for all mentioned above! I was there and so was PRD1 we were second row. could have easily mistaken me for Tomatito though

Err... I should have referred to Jose Maya rather than Emilio Maya - error caused by great excitement/delirium. While I'm at it, a very honourable mention should go to Lucky Losada on percussion - he definitely gets a 12 in my book.

This may be a little off topic, but I am so jealous!

I have emailed Tomatito's management and begged them to send him to Canada anywhere! I recommend the Montreal Jazz fest. The woman was very very nice and she said that Tomatito would love to come here, but it just isn't cost efficient to bring his whole ensemble over.

I think besides some shows with Michel Camilo in New York promoting their Spain albums, Tomatito has never done a flamenco gig in North America. Can someone confirm this?

<- another jealous guy over here!!

Harry, I see you're another Canadian who is hungry for flamenco shows! My fiancee and I are seeing Paco & Co. in June as an early honeymoon trip. I would absolutely love to see Tomatito! I think it's great you contacted his management - maybe he would consider coming over for some stripped down shows at some point.

Jeez, Harry...

And I always thought you were from London!

(Shows you it's always handy to fill in the "Location" part of your profile..)

cheers,

Ron

I saw him in New York three years ago at the NY Flamenco Festival, with La Tana and some others.

One of the reasons I didn't go to any of the London festival concerts this year was that I'd already seen two of the big acts (Tomatito and Estrella Morente) at the NY festival in other years - London needs to stop cramping our style and find its own flamencos!! [:D] I would have loved to see Poveda but the combination of weeknight concerts, 9 AM lectures, student poverty, and frantically trying to get a PhD offer made that all but impossible [:o]

Hey Ron,

yeah I just filled in the location part of the profile, I missed it first time around. I also have a signature now!

The scene here is so quiet that being anywhere in Europe would be quite the improvement. I would say that dance is very big in Montreal, so there are a lot of dancers, but half a dozen guitarists jealously guard their art. I am not one of them however.
