I think my favorite form to listen to is the siguiryas (sp?) and the form i generally don't like listening to is the alegria...Im just not a fan of joyful music i suppose...i like it gritty and depressing

Anyone else feel like talking about the styles they like and dislike the most

Siguiriyas, seguiriyas, seguirillas... All deformations of "seguidilla." I prefer siguiriya, with "guiri" right in the middle.[;)]

It depends on who's singing/playing as everyone is better at some styles than others. I enjoy anything with flamenco's asymmetrical rhythm: bulería, soleá, siguiriya, alegría, etc. For a change of pace, most of the free-form styles are nice (malagueñas, cantes mineros), as well as fandangos de Huelva and cantes abandolaos. I don't care for most of the ida y vuelta styles, like columbianas, milongas, vidalita.

But it all depends. I once saw a singer bring down the house with a garrotín. It was at the end of a long night at a peña with knowledgeable aficionados, and others before him had already sung siguiriyas and other dramatic styles. Nobody was expecting it, he sang very well, and it was a refreshing way to put an end to the evening.

I totally agree... the singer/guitarist/dancer makes it or breaks it. Some forms really come to life when performed by certain people. All in all, I also prefer the puro palos (Buleria/Solea/Alegrias/Seguiriyas as well as free form cantes). I'm also not a big fan of the ida y vuelta styles, safe maybe for the Guajira... but as you said, they can be refreshing if performed well.

If we're going more upbeat I'll take a groovy Tangos.

well I share that with you .. I'm not a big fan of alegria [:)] for some reasons I don''t enjoy it so much, I don't think it's related to happiness mm because I like to play rumba or colombiana .. it's just that alegria heheh I'm sure that will change with time
while I feel so excited when playing hmmmm let's say for now Taranta, tango, rondena and buleria

I am not a big rumba fan. As a general rule, any palo not recorded by Ramon Montoya in his famous sessions is to be avoided! So the Guajira is ok, and to me an alegrias must be played por Rosa ideally!

its hard.

I really dig alegrias!! particularly at the moment. ive been working on caracoles for my dance class for ages now and im gatherng more material all the time so its very exciting.

i must say i really enjoy dark stuff in general in most genres and artistic areas but still find alegria the most appealing at the moment.

i have a small confession that after so many years playing i barely ever touch seguiriyas... i must correct that. but something about it turns me off learning more...dunno why.... perhaps the compas.

to be honest tho and without pouring water on your thread i love most of the main palos, but differs from week to week. actually i particularly love a moody rondena.

Solea, Bulerias and Granainas are my favourites.

Solea because I like the mood it sets; kind of depressing and sad. Kinda like finding your inner self or something.

Bulerias because of the fast pace. I just love everything about Bulerias, I don't know why; I just do [;)]

Granainas because I am a fan of classical music as well, it lets me play flamenco... but more classical-ly? Also I like the E harmonic minor scales hehe [:D]

Taranta is my least favourite, starts off awesome with the really rich deep chords than gets boring and repetitive IMO.

I am unsure about Tangos, to me it sounds like a slow paced Bulerias. I haven't started learning anything about tangos yet so I can't really judge it yet xD I am sure the dance is awesome though

Also for a note on Rumba, I like the way it sounds - I just don't like how main stream it has become.

I'm surprised no one has put Sevillanas at the bottom of their list. It's firmly at the bottom in my league table. Solea por Buleria is my current favourite

I never saw a point in liking/ disliking certain palos nor do I feel an attraction to a certain palo!

I like most. But Solea is something very special and Taranta can be to much sorrow. Some good gitano tangos can be very sexy and a good siguiriya leaves me mout open and breathless. Solea por bulerias has a bit of everything and Jerez bulerias is wonderfull, but all this copla like bulerias makes me wanna go out and pee.

I prefer the Zambra, Taranta, and Rondena. Especially Ramon Montoya's Rondena. It seems to me that the Zambra is missing in modern flamenco. I can't recall many modern greats even recording same. Not including Paco Pena of course. Listen to the Taranta and Zambra of Nino Ricardo, the Zambras of Sabicas, Paco Pena's rendition of both the Rondena by Ramon Montoya, and the Zambra of Sabicas and one will find joy in these dark pieces. It seems to me that the modern fashion of flamenco is omitting some of its most important roots. My 2 cents...

Due to one of my random wanderings, I found myself in a night club outside Tangier in the company of a group of prosperous Moroccans. Hashish smoke rolled in thick clouds from the fancily appointed restrooms.

The women, dressed in the latest from Milan and Madrid, got up to dance. Their maids rummaged in their satchels and handed them Hermes scarves, which the women tied around their hips. The women stepped into moves that looked like belly dance to me, while their maids broke into complicated palmas.

The band was playing what could have been a Niño Ricardo zambra.

Yeah, I've heard a couple of things like that from Morocco (just on TV, though [:D]). The palmas were "sticky" like in tanguillos. Lots of interesting rhythmic variations.

I spend hours on Youtube, all and any palos move me if I'm honest, some more than others - and I find I prefer the old artists, the younger cantaors seem to lack something. Not all of them, but some do, and it's an intangible thing. I'm impressed with something that touches on the past, I think it's necessary to the art. I'm beginning to see Flamenco as a way of life, I really didn't realise it was an expression of a way of life

I was stunned by this film even though the cantaor was a "Star" and perhaps had left his roots a little?

If you understand flamenco, then el cante por soleares y seguiriyas is emotivo. If you think guitar is flamenco, then any old solo will do[:@] They all sound the same.

I was not aware there was more than one palo in flamenco.
Solea is the only form in flamenco.

If you think otherwise you are totally a brain scrambled chicken and you drive a Ford Pinto.
