gerundino63 -> buzz search,,,,,,, (Mar. 9 2005 8:16:12)

Hola Amigo's

Last friday, I had with two of my frends our usual guitarpartyday.
One of them have a nice Conde, and it was buzzing a lot. Too lot.
It did not buzz before ever, so I searched the whole guitar, got the bone out everything.

The buzzing staid.

It was very cold here the past few days, so perhaps it was getting to dry and was bend a little, we wached and wached, but it looks straight.

Than I decided to put the bridge higher and tried it.....still the same....

My frend was looking more and more terrified, and the other whan was sitting quietly in the corner, no flamenco fiesta what so ever.

Than I asked my frend when he put other strings on the guitar, but he could not remember, so we put other strings on it, and, guess what, it dissapeared!

So, if you ever have a strange buzzing, before set the guitar on fire, or smash it to the wall from desperately searching, first try to put a new set of strings on it!

Btw. After that we played till the sunset.......

Peter

My new guitar also buzzes a lot with the capo at the 2nd or higher. When I will have to change the strings, I will go for hard tension ones to see what happens? Do any of you have solved the problem with this procedure?
thanks
Antonio

Hi Antonio.

There is a good possibility that the problem is solved with hard tension strings.

If that will not solve the problem, the next thing to do is to put a piece of nylon string under the bridge bone and try again.
If that solve the problem, you must get a higher bone.

That are the things you can do yourself.

If that not solve the problem, bring it to a guitarbuilder, he can see what is the problem, maybe shave some frets down ( do not do that yourself).

all the best, Peter

Was one of the old strings touching the soundboard behind the bridge? I have had it when a tied end is in contact.

Well, Simon, I did look to that, I have it sometimes too.
But this little things are hard to find.

I am glad everything is ok now, so, to speak with the saying of our criminals, do not ask why, but benefit by.

Well, it is a duch saying, it rimes in duch....so, it is something like this..

Here it is: vraag niet hoe het kan, maar proviteer ervan!
leterly translated: ask not how it can,but profit fromit!

so, sometimes you teach me english, and you learn some duch from me, right![:D]

Hi,
Thank you for your answers. Escribano; unfortunatly it is not the string touching the soundboard.
Gerundino, I will follow your sugestions. I never heard of this nylon string under the bridge bone. I have a selmer type guitar and if the bridge is to low we can put a thin sheet of some hard material ; ideally is rosewood but people use also old credit cards and even the wood from camenbert boxes ( although I think this could bring a strange smell to your guitar[;)]).
I saw in one of the videos from Oscar Herrero that one can also use a thin piece of laminated wood; the solution of the nylon string seems to me much more atractive and easy. Have you tried it ? does it afect the sound?
Thanks again
Antonio

Hi Antonio!

I ment it only to try if this would solve the problem.

The best thing to do, if the buzzes goes away with the piece of string is buying a new, higher bone.

The second best, is a piece of laminated rosewood.

I would use only a string to try, or perhaps on an old cheap guitar.
But, it does not effect the sound.

Peter.
