Can you guys explain the difference between rumba like Gypsy Kings and popular flamenco like Nina Pastori and El Cigala?

I know part of it is the guitar technique with the string muting method but are there other differences?

Im thinking maybe popular flamenco uses a variety of compas where rumba uses less variety but I may be completely off.

Thanks for all the info you guys give me, this site is excellent and I'm learning quite a bit

Hey Mark,

my understanding of this matter is that Gypsy Kings play Rumbas almost exclusively. Different tempos, major and minor etc... but their songs all have a rumba rhythm and more or less the same rumba right hand strumming pattern. Maybe at times they will have an instrumental with rhythm guitars doing a rumba and a lead on top etc... and I know they actually have at least one Bulerias.

I am not that familiar with El Cigala but my impression is that he does a very jazzy style of fusion, which may be influenced by other Latin American rhythms like Bossa Nova etc....but perhaps someone else can enlighten us.
