El Burdo -> RE: how i quit smoking (Nov. 15 2011 20:59:03)

My solution is simple. I smoked for years and gave up every birthday, every Christmas, every national no smoking day, every anniversary of when I last gave up etc etc... all to no avail. I was the same person. So I decided to change that person. I bought a pair of running shoes and swore I would not buy any more cigarettes until I had 'paid for' the shoes. That took three weeks. By then I was thinking of myself as a runner, not a smoker. My change of head enable me to re-position my attitude to smoking. The more I got fitter the better I felt and the less I needed to smoke. A creep 'friend' tried to get me back again (he was basically resentful!) but other nicer friends in the room persuaded me to resist. That was close - there'll still be times. But here I am 25 years later and I haven't smoked since. I occasionally dream of smoking but it feels great when I wake up with a shock only to realise that it was a dream. (There's always the beer mat, pin and upturned glass for the other type pf smoking!) Good luck.
