JoseLuis -> Newbie Planning a Trip to Jerez (Feb. 6 2011 15:15:18)

Hello,

So I've recently gotten very much into Flamenco. At this point it's only really the Seguiriyas that interest me, although I'm trying to branch out and appreciate the other forms.

Anyway, this year I was planning to take a trip to Jerez to listen to some authentic Flamenco. I understand there's a festival in February, but that's a bit last minute for me. I was wondering whether it is realistic for one to go during other times of the year (I was thinking some time this summer) and be able to listen to the real thing every night? If so, where would one do this? Are there renowned local bars or clubs where this takes place that one can just drop in of an evening? Is Manuel Agujetas still singing or is he too old for all that now?

Advice and guidance would be most appreciated.

Saludos,

Jose Luis

Jerez is great, but don't go in August - everyone's on vacation. Check out the Bernal guitar shop, too. I like his guitars. Also take a trip to Cadiz - it's only about a 20 minute drive, and the beaches are great.

Look for the BulerĂas de Jerez in September.

September is the time to go. I think it is the second fortnight (you need to check). There's a big performance in the Plaza de Toros and then for a week or so afterwards there are free performances, open air, in the Plaza de la Asuncion. I would highly recommend the latter and, in particular, the Ciclo de Pena en Pena. Every night after the performance in the plaza there is usually a local pena with something on.
