I will have to agree here. I liked that quite a lot. Thank you for posting if this is any indication should be a great CD. I also really enjoy solo guitar with just Cajon, palmas and jaleo so that was great.

Michael

YESSAH! For me, JCR is the most innovative composer in flamenco today and, I don't say this lightly, maybe ever. I've got every CD he's played on and I never get tired of his pieces. I've got every Paco, Vicente and Manolo CD too, and as much as I love them, they don't have the staying power of Juan Carlos' compositions. There is always something new to discover. Highly recommended - but please buy his CDs. A great, but underappreciated artist like this needs our support!

tk -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 12 2012 18:58:14)

Excellent playing. I never listened to him before but I will, going forward. I have to say, this Buleria, is very very similar to Paco's Soniquete.

definitely not IMO, Paco always has these little gems inside his compositions, little melodic parts that you'll remember, sometimes only seconds of a falseta. think of the campás part in soniquete with the loud bass line underneath. something I miss at Juan Carlos Romero.

Wow, very clean playing

[:D] u realize its a video clip right ? mimicking what he recorded earlier in the studio.....there would be something wrong with him if he had mistakes and unclean playing on his studio recorded and mixed ready for retail album

love the guys style...from the first...ok second album

Mark2 -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 13 2012 16:36:04)

Was his first record the one that had someone rapping on one of the tunes?

Plenty of "retail albums" out there with sloppy playing on them.

Juan's playing is extremely clean.

not that i remember...the first album was still really nice...but not much stood out in my memory so i mustn't have liked it as much

...i am sure there is plenty of "retail albums" with unclean and sloppy playing but equally i am sure theres albums where unclean playing was fixed...through many different takes and editing.....unless one was in the room next to him to count how many takes he did ...id say its impossible to know for certain from a finished, polished and mixed album that its being mimicked in a Mtv like video clip right ?

i am sure i heard of singers and musicians who don't sound like they do on their albums

EDIT

@ Mark 2

just listened to the first album again ...lol now i remember, u right ...i dont know what id call that but ...in the tanguillo

ToddK -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 13 2012 18:02:55)

You cant fix unclean playing. If its not played clean, its not going to sound
clean.

You can punch in, or edit things, but you cant make a note, notes, or chords
that were played in a fuzzy unclear way, clean. Its impossible.
You cant get rid of string noises, squeaks, buzzez, etc. You can only
re-record it and edit it in, but it still has to be played cleanly.

You, and clearly many people have the complete wrong idea about what
can realistically be done in the studio. Its not Disneyland. It might be that
way for vocal tuning, but for acoustic instruments, things havent changed that
much.

Anybody that has done a real deal album knows this. Ask Ricardo.

cool...so hypothetically if i do 1000....10000000000 takes and punch all the cleanest bits in...am i still a clean player ? even the worst player in the world can record 5 minutes of clean playing punching in the cleanest bits out of 1000 takes....

do you have to play it clean the first time or the 1000th time to be considered a clean player ? and then how can you tell if the recording is from his 1st time, 2nd, 3rd or 50th time ?

do you believe you can tell every time someone punches something in ?
we can put it to a test...i can do a track with a few punch ins...write down the exact location...give it to someone to keep and you have to guess the exact locations of where i punched in..

quote:

ok...Ricardo...can an unclean player fake 5 minutes of clean playing after punching in the cleanest parts out of 100000 takes ? and could you tell how many takes he did before the track you are listening too ?

Ron.M -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 13 2012 18:38:26)

Just had to hear the first 15 seconds and it immediately reminded me of ToddK's playing!

Same tone, same style.

OK Todd doesn't write his own stuff or maybe play with the same confidence as Juan.

But the similarities are striking to my ear anyway.

Not sayin' this to be "nice" or anything...

Sayin' it 'cos it's the truth.

BTW Effin' great Bulerias!
Thanks Arash!

cheers,

Ron

Anything but, amigo..!

Really, I don't think these guys record it 100 times or anything.
That's pop albums, with zillions of overlays and mixes.

You know that feeling when you get in the "zone" and everything works and you don't care about anything except what you're doing?

I think these guys are in the zone when they make those recordings.

The job of the recording engineer is to capture it RIGHT.

There are plenty great artists who have made the first take the final one.

Sinatra, Coltrane....the list goes on and on...

Think how many "Live" albums you've heard where everything is note perfect and a sensational performance....

I'll tell you one thing though...

At an early Paco Peña concert, I wondered why, if he kinda fluffed a falseta a bit or wasn't happy with it, he would smile and stay exactly in compás and go right back to the start and play it again without missing a beat.
I thought "WTF?....nobody noticed or really cared...why?"

Then it dawned on me.

Pefect studio discipline.....easy to edit.

cheers,

Ron

Florian -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 13 2012 19:00:13)

i know Ron, you are right !! and this guy is amazing...but...and pretend we not talking about him

my point is...one cant realistically and surely tell how clean this guy plays form a recorded and produced album...that's all i am saying...your ears could deceive you...for you know he could have punched in the best of 10000 takes....now i am not saying he did...but if he did, you and i would have no idea

quote:

Think how many "Live" albums you've heard where everything is note perfect .

none...theres always something...cause in real "live" things sound a little closer to what they are (even they are mixed or tweaked if possible...or if theres recordings of the same material from a different night) but still not as a studio recorded and mixed album

quote:

There are plenty great artists who have made the first take the final one.

yes same in flamenco...but listen to a guitar flamenco album from the 60's 70's from the first take and ones from now....compare the timing and the perfection in today's bulerias...the phrasing, the roundness, the absolute loop like PERFECT soniquete..and perfectly rounded remates

a lot of it is to do with the advancement of guitar yes... but also a lot to do with the difference in recording techniques..and the approach...the expectation of soniquete in todays album...just a little off and it stands out as bad

with this kind of pressure for a commercially released flamenco album and today's standards and competition i am guessing...no one is just turning the mic on and going from the top to the end...that's it ...first track...done, "because i don't care that this album will represent me forever...i have principals"...HOWEver good they are

Ron.M -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 13 2012 19:14:18)

Yeah Flo...but commercial recording studios are not the place to eff around 'cos time is $$$.
It's not like effing around in your room for a few days.

I'm pretty sure there has been the odd correction and playing around with eq post recording, but I don't reckon that much.

The guitar is a pretty difficult instrument to tamper with due to the sharp attack and decay etc.
Human voice and wind instruments, or even bowed instruments much easier IMO.

cheers,

Ron

Fantasia Flamenca (1970) just totally knocks me out in this respect Flo...

El Tempul sounds like it HAD to have been tweaked a bit...Panaderos...Guajiras de Lucia....

I like this album a lot. It's "Naked Guitar"... nowhere to hide...

Ron

maybe...or u could build a pro recording studio at your house and record there

with all the respect...the bulerias tracks for example while are great...and absolutely best possibly played IMO it dosent compare to some of todays studio recorded absolutely PERFECTLY rounded and loop like soniqete buleria recordings......a click track is standard...i know this cause i asked a cajon player that worked in some of this studio recordings...i asked him whats the process...

again not cause of the playing but because of the methods used and the change in approach to a commercial album production

Hey...I wonder when the technology gets so advanced that in 5 years time some 15 year old kid is gonna write, produce ,edit and print a complete commercial quality movie like "Star Wars" all on his computer in his bedroom! LOL! [:D]

i missed this...wow really [:D]

ive done it a few times...i go to start...its not happening the first time...i do a round of pretending sparse...artistic compas buls**it...come back to the 12 again and try again lol...not often but when i really like a falseta, i stubborn up...usually new ones

XXX -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 13 2012 19:59:51)

I know that there are ways to literally make visible whether a recording has been "punched in" or not. I prefer to not do that because i dont want to know, and i especially dont want to find out that my all time most favorite guitar track has been punched in 10 times. [&:]
We shouldnt see studio recordings as a normal performance. Its more like how the composer intended it to sound when everything is perfect.

quote:

exactly...and that's the way i see it...i don't kid myself that Vicente has got that awesome reverb following him everywhere and records every track on an album in the first take from the start to the end, he probably could...but would every note and spacing and pull off and everything come out as pristine perfect and squidgy clean and perfectly rounded as it is ?... ...or on the other side of the coin think that its all about the studio and mixing and effects and it has nothing to do with their skill

production talk aside, Romeros bulerias is absolutely brilliant

Ron.M -> RE: Juan Carlos Romero - New CD (Jun. 14 2012 7:37:25)

I'm sure it is possible with a great deal of care and time to "fix" little bits here and there with modern digital recording, but at the end of the day JM has access to all this modern studio technology too, and he still sounds like...well...JM !

Having the equipment and knowledge of the medium, backed up with years of practical experience is bound to make a difference though.

If I had to photograph something and Escribano had to photograph the same thing, whose picture is gonna look the best?

cheers,

Ron

true...but that's not the quality of his sound...its the content, the material...i have heard some of his albums or lessons dvd..and the sound itself was great...kind of older school sound...guessing that's also cause of his preference and his idea of how a flamenco guitar should sound on recording

i dont think sound can transform a player and shift you 100% and make unrealistic changes to your skill...but i think good sound can make you sound better and bad sound can make you sound less better

i think that if you took a photo with simons camera of the same object...it would probably make you seem like perhaps a better photographer than you really are ?.perhaps not like Simon, but in any case better than you are ..because it is a great camera...and if you took a photo of the same object with a $5 disposable camera it would make you seem average or even less skilled.

if Simon himself took a photo of the same item...with the 2 different cameras, and you didn't know it was the same guy...it would look like perhaps two differently skilled photographers ?

its not an accusation or an excuse or a way to discredit anyone's skill...its just a simple fact of life...better cameras photograph better, better video cameras get better quality videos, better guitars sound better, better recording equipment records better, and better vacuum cleaners have more suction...now theres always exceptions to those rules...but this are the exceptions, not the rule...

its like saying Senna could have won the grand prix in a volvo cause he had skill...his car and his engineers had nothing to do with it
