krichards -> Counterfeit strings? (Jan. 25 2011 7:59:51)

I bought some sets of D'Addario Pro Arte normal tension strings on Ebay about a year ago;
1st set: The top E broke as I tuned it up to pitch. It had never happened to me before but I didn't think too much about it.

2nd set: The intonation on the treble strings was so bad I had to change them straight away

3rd set: I fiitted this set to my newly completed no 23. The D string sounded bad and the top two strings were lifeless, dead sounding. I changed the whole set and noticed a massive difference.

Maybe I've been unlucky and I've bought a bad batch, but in the past I've used D'Addario precisely because of their consistency and reliabilty. I feel that they are kind of 'neutral' strings and so ideal to fit on a newly built guitar so assess its qualities against previous builds.

But I am suspicious of these strings.
Is it possible that they are fakes, from China, say?? Or am I being paranoid?

Hi Kevin

You're not paranoid.
There are, apparently, lots of counterfeit strings in circulation.

also i wonder if expiry date plays a part in this...i would imagine whomever is selling them on ebay might have gotten some deal in bulk and to be able to sell em for 10 bucs a pack...somethings got to give...even if they are genuine...expiry date or time in warehouse might affect quality....otherwise why on earth would they be able to get their hands on it so cheap...makes no sense to sell perfectly good, working strings to one guy for 5 bucs who probably dosent even have the same buying power as a music store when u can sell to a store for 10 or 15

there might be some rare, occasional exceptions but most times if something is too good to be true its because its normally not true

Thanks for this link Graham. I'm now quite convinced they are fakes.
I have to say, though, that the packaging is very impressive, just like the genuine article
