This "buleria de la raza vieja" from Fernando de la Morena sounds with a special aire to my ears.
Is this a personnal creation from him? or is it from a particular style of buleria ?

I can't answer your question but I loved the clip! The palmeros are classic. Love Moraito too, just so flamenco.

funny you should mention this one, we've just learned this with our band...it's a strange one as it's both minor and major, it was a bit unusual to me at first...i can't shed any light on historical background unfortunately...

It's called cuplé or copla, a kind of theater song that became popular in the first half of the 20th century (Conchita Piquer, Rocío Jurado, etc.) Cuplés have been sung por bulerías for a long time. It's a good way to connect with a Spanish audience because the songs are usually very well known and go over well with people who may not have had much contact with flamenco. Adds variety to a performance, too. You might be able to find a much older version of "Eugenia Montijo" on YouTube from Spanish cinema. He sings another cuplé at 1:46, when Moraíto mutes the strings.

Here are the lyrics from one of his albums, followed by the original version:

Eugenia de Montijo
tiene dos hijas
una se llama Eugenia
la otra Francisca

los majos de Granada
las solicitan
porque las dos son bellas
y granadinas

pero mi señora
María Manuela
que tiene el casamiento
tiene mucha escuela

los majos le dicen
con mucho tremor
mientras abre y cierra
su abanico malva
con tal de llamarla
Duquesa del Alba
linda emperadora
de una casa vieja

la flor y nata de los donceles
le cantan a María la Manuela

Original version of León y Ochaíta (lyrics) and Manuel Quiroga (music)

Doña María Manuela
tiene dos hijas,
una se llama Eugenia
y otra Francisca.
Los majos de Granada
las solicitan
porque las dos son guapas
y granadinas.

a doña Manuela cantan:

(refrain)

Eugenia de Montijo,
que pena, pena,
que te vayas de España
para ser reina.
Por las lises de Francia
Granada dejas,

(refrain)

[:)] thanks Norman. You're a fount of knowledge.

That's interesting. Copla! Is something i wanted to ask for a long time.
I have read several times that the next Paco's album would be based on the Coplas.

He'll released a variety album?[:D] Or maybe this variety will be included in the flamenco aera?...uyy!! i can already heard the groans of the purists [8D]

Greetings Mezzo - If you want a recording of Fernando de la Morena performing I can highly recommend this set of CDs Al aire de Jerez. The full title, I think, is Al aire de Jerez, la herencia cantaora de tres familias - one CD of los Moneo, one of los Zambo and another of Los de la Morena where this is listed as Eugenia de Montijo.

It's a great set of CDs, Moraito and son on guitar there are some great bulerias on it that you won't hear outside of Jerez. Thanks for putting the clip up. I think it's great and I really appreciated the erudite comments from NormanKliman.

Changue
