Hi Dylan,

I can arrange accomodation in the house of Jaime 'El Parrón' flamenco singer. Its basically just a room and and not to everyone's taste ( bed/shower room/hot plate for making coffee) but if you want to stay with a flamenco family it's a great opportunity to be in the thick of things. There's a young American staying with them at the moment and he cant believe his luck hanging out with the flamencos. There's also a cave/studio for practising and for juergas.

If you are interested just send me an email. If its not what you are after I can reccomend other places. I can also arrange classes with Emilio Maya should you wish.

Granada's a great place, just ask Simon. He's also taken classes with Emilio.

Saludos
Kate

dylan -> RE: GRANADA ACCOMODATION (Mar. 2 2005 12:57:05)

hi kate..aslo by the way..how much is the room??and what do you think of the group classes at carmen de las cuevas

Kate -> RE: GRANADA ACCOMODATION (Mar. 2 2005 13:34:12)

No I dont know him, but have heard about an Israeli percussionist called David, who plays an instrument alled a Hang. He won a music competition in Cadiz with a friend of mine from Belgium Meera Fé. She came round to the studio recently to show me and some flamenco percussionists the hang, and the flamencos loved it. Could be the new 'cajón'. Its a bit limited as it is a tuned instrument but it sounded great por bulería.

But yes it is a small world, here they say ' Granada es un panuelo" Granada is a hankerchief, but it means the same thing. My friend Nacho changed it to ' Granada es un pañuelo de segundo mano" Granada is a used hankerchief, which is pretty witty if you know Granada and the attitude here and the fact that Nacho is from Cordoba.

Jaime's place has two rooms, the small one for €25 and the bigger one for €35. You can also check out Rafa's place in the Albaicin www.elnumero8.com online, and ask him his prices which are very good value.

Ooops forgot to answer this bit but can't help you there as I have never taken a class at Carmen Las Cuevas. People I know who have dont seem to have any complaints.

Haven't taken any but I can recommend 1:1 with Emilio - good teacher, patient and kind company. He even bought me a beer[:D]

Probably twice the price of a group but worth it for a week if you can manage it. 2 hours a day and lots of practise in Plaza Nueva, see who you might meet.

With respect of Carmen de las Cuevas, I've heard a bit of everything. From people really liking it to others saying that its waste of time and money. I have the feeling that the quality is good for being a school with group lessons. They are quite well organized, which is something here, but in the end its all about the individual person and luck. Maybe you get together with some others where you mix well or visa versa. You never know. Good quality individual lessons can be found from around 18 euros.

With respect of accomodation. Think of what YOU would like. If thats a quiet space for practizing and a kitchen, I'll recommend you Rafas place, which are small appartments which are nice and cool in summer, and well heated in winter. They are around 30 Euros for 1 person. If you prefer to go out to eat, and hang around with flamencos, maybe you'll be better of at Jaimes/Conchas place. Again, its all about your own personality.

Good luck
Anders
