Hey dave,

Just don't click on the thread header.

There are other interesting threads, like the New vs Old one and the very informative one about the Fake strings + uploads etc.

Just treat the Forum like a magazine...just skip the bits you're not interested in.

No need for special software.

Anyway, the thread is almost exhausted now...no more to be said about lucky guitar finds or flowery language vs plain language.

So let's move onto something else... like is Puro better than Modern, or is Conde the best guitar ever made. [:D]

cheers,

Ron

Very interesting.
Can you elaborate please, how exactly detouring / bending of the wrist will remove tension while reaching on the fretboard?

Ruphus

True, looks are important, but there were plenty of "high" straping metal guitar gods in the 80's. Keeping the guitar low was ok for right hand arm tension because rhythm guitar guys were picking from the wrist. Some "elbow" pickers need the guitar up higher. Elbow picking is generally thought of as not efficient for speed and accuracy.

In terms of left hand, well, thumb goes OVER TOP of the neck so you don't need to bend the wrist like in classical or flamenco guitar. Randy Roads kept the guitar very low for picking, but tilted the neck up as he had a more "classical" approach to left hand technique. It looked cool too. [;)]

It must be appearing really smart and congruent to you to switch from what you questioned first to something else, after you have read of that I am laborating on focal dystonia.
How old are you, if I may ask? I guess somewhere between 13 and 23?

With a penny for every lemming one could buy himself another planet.

Are you telling me that the neck dangling down around hip hight could be accomodating the left hand in a way, or just pointing out thumb over top as the compensation that it is?

And how exactly would it be helping the right hands wrist to have the guitar down there?
Familiar with electric guitar myself a bit, I can tell that whether with straigthened out or bended arm, it makes no difference for twisting the wrist. Only what such posture can do is hindering, as you have to bend the wrist sideways ( towards the side of the thumb.)

If hanging the guitar that low was of any practical background, likely all rock guitarists had gone for it.

I think you will find that most rock guitarists in the 80's were more worried about their hair, the amount of slashes on their jeans, the amount of silk scarfs they had and how cool the Skull painted BC Rich looked dangling below the waist than they were in analyzing the ergonomics of left hand. A few power chords, some two handed tapping, a catchy chorus and a lot of distortion meant you could get away with almost anything.
Admittedly there were guys like Satriani, Jason Becker and Alan Holdsworth who made the instrument an art and a huge numbers of guys who practised speed picking in the comfort of their bedrooms but mostly I remember it was about having fun, getting drunk and looking cool. I wouldn't try analyzing it more intellectually than that because perfection was never the aim and fashion has nothing to do with practicality.

For sure it is not "thought about" so much, but the thumb is actually used to play bass notes by MANY rock players, so, I guess if you want to be a scientist about it you could say some players may have let that guitar hang even lower for such "comfort" of the technique they use.

Here watch a rock "maestro" check out the left hand thumb wrist/ and right hand/arm for picking. Totally comfy and fun and cool looking.[:D]

Ah Man...I remember seeing Extreme in London years ago with Brian May as special guest. They were my favourate band at the time. Whatever happened to Nuno Bettencourt? He had his own signature guitar series at one time and was amazing live. He had this incredible string skipping double hand arpeggio tapping thing that I spent ages trying to get. He is probably selling real estate or something now [:D]

Hey Ricardo,

I canĀ“t access youtube right now, but I know what you mean.
Especially with thin necks players are seen using their thumbs for pressing down strings.
I think with some of the "thinnies" like the "oud" or how you spell it, engaging the thumb is even being traditional technique.

When I used to watch Top of the Pops, my old man used to shake his head at the "longhaired louts singing like girls" and say "in a year's time they'll be back on the scaffolding"....
Which annoyed me no end at that age. [:D]

cheers,

Ron
